To get desktop icons all you need to do is:
1: open Applications (top left menu) and select "System Tools" > "Prefrences" > "Advanced settings".
2: click on "Desktop", and then enable "Have file manager handle the desktop"
Hope this helps :)

FYI 03:40 -> To get context options (Gnome classic only, won't work in shell) you need to press Alt+ Right Click (or Alt + Super + Right Click) instead of just right clicking on panel.

I agree. XFCE's 2 year release cycle fits Debian really well.
It would've made Debian stand out more ._.

Pretty good review, but one frustrating point that makes me wince every time you say it, the disto name is "Deb-Ian" as in "Deborah and Ian", the original creators. I'm sure Deborah would raise an eye at being called "Deeb". ;)

"There is stable release and there are also two main development repositories unstable and testing which are continually updated during the development of the next stable release. The latest packages arrive in unstable (which always has the codename "Sid")."

It's true that testing is in freeze for a few months when next stable is to be released, but you can download newer software from Debian Mozilla for example.Anyway, you can use testing or unstable and keep rolling. :)

I guess I phrased my question poorly. Besides the issues of bugs, what do you like more about xfce or mate? I happen to like GNOME3 ( desktop user, not server) and am wondering where all of the hate stems from.

I found the default desktop dificult to work with. your very limited with options. I was able to place quick launch icons on the bar however I was un able to remove them. the interface in the package manager was simplistic in design to a fault giving little information about the packages and some were unclear to the perpose. I switched over to the KDE desktop and it is muck easier to work with and has more options avialable with a sleaker design.

How much ram does it use at your system?

but after making all the modifications needed to make it work well, it takes up about 13gb. I prefer ubuntu 9.04 and 10.04 because it gives you much more options to begin with and is very light weight. after installing several applications in ubuntu, it took up around 4gb. and yes I know I'm talking bout older versions of Ubuntu but I dont much care for Unity. its too restrickting.

it's visually not attractive, but it never crashed for me, what i like is it's simple way of customizing it

You need to check "let file manager handle desktop" in shell settings, if you want a real desktop.

That's a very nice opinion you have there, but could you not give people the wrong idea? There's nothing wrong with Gnome, it's just not for everyone.
