Commands and Links:

Update & Upgrade:
su
(Enter root password when prompted)
apt update;
apt upgrade

Install Favorite Apps:
su
(Enter root password when prompted)
apt install vlc gimp gparted 0ad alien-arena

Install Timeshift Backup Tool:
su
(Enter root password when prompted)
apt install timeshift

Install Preload:
su
(Enter root password when prompted)
apt install preload

Improve Laptop Battery:
su
(Enter root password when prompted)
apt install tlp tlp-rdw
Just run the above command and you don’t need to do anything else. It’ll make your laptop battery last longer by implementing some power-saving protocols. Sorry, I forgot this one in the video.

Firefox Tweaks:
about:config

Change DNS:
8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4

GS Connect GNOME Extensions:
apt install gnome-shell-extension-manager
(Select shell version 43)

Install Flatpak:
su
(Enter root password when prompted)
apt install flatpak
apt install gnome-software-plugin-flatpak

Restart

Bleachbit:
sudo apt install bleachbit

I think the very 1st thing to do after installing debian 12 is adding your user name to sudoers.

Great quick-start guide! Only comment I have is that I'd personally use sudo to install, rather than always using su to switch to root.

Thanks, very helpful. I have been running debian on RPI and VMs for years and lately replaced Windows 11 with it on my notebook. Wow, it's like flying. Well, I had to install a newer kernel to get wifi running, but that's the only big issue I had.

First thing you should do on a new Debian install is put everything you do on a new install into a bash script.

:) I never had to use Timeshift on a Debian based system - it's that stable. Arch and Tumbleweed, like all rolling releases, are a different story. So, I just use the BU backup script to back up my system on a usb drive. An old sage told me never to throw caution to the wind.

with btrfs file system Timeshift is unneccesary - you could make backups of your system instantly
