In this video we look for a possible underground water leak and try to locate a pipe with dowsing rods. We also make a wrench to shut off the water to the house in the meter box.

Try introducing compressed air to the line. Given how wet your yard is this would definitely help expedite the process. Great job chasing the leak. I have also had luck using these rods while walking along the top of the service line. The rods will usually both turn to the left when above the leak. I have seen this response after I use all of my Sewerin leak tools to pinpoint the leak.

Locate your water meter(A)and the location where your water line first enter your building(B).Mark the straight line from A to B on the ground (maybe using white flour, dry sand, wooden pegs etc).Measure the depth of your water meter if it is placed in a chamber below ground level. locate the most healthy vegetation (grass scrub etc) along the previously marked line. Carefully dig a 1 foot wide by 16 inches deep(go deeper than your underground meter maybe 1 feet extra) across the selected area.Extend your trench 3 feet on both side of your line. Find your pipe.Cut and plug your pipe end that joining to the meter. Turn on your water and see if there is leakage in your pipe(The meter stop reading if there is no leakage)Now you know that it is along the line toward your building that leaking..and the rest is luck..(retired CE)
And ya water witching is good to be done during dry weather and if your ground water is far below your ground level other wise you might got water flow from other sources rather than your domestic pipe water. By the way it does help if you increase the flow of your water by turning on a couple of water outlet in your house and believe me the wonder sticks do tell you the flow direction of your pipe.Good luck. And do not use a very thick rod simply use the thinner metal cloth hanger as the action is more sensitive for life flowing water detection.(I do use my sticks this morning just to make sure what I said was true and It was true)

We had a sewer clay line pipe break which was under the asphalt which backed-up everthing in the house so their were absolutely no signs in the asphalt to locate the pipe or the break.
We thought it changed angle at some point down the drive way which was in a fairly large area of the carport.
My friend grabbed a coat hanger bent it up and did the same method as the gentleman in the video. He went back and forth across alleged pipe and marked the pipe and the bend by marking both sides of the pipe within a foot of each side of the pipe. He marked the route of the clay pipe for about 40 feet where the break was or assumed so. Plumbers came in trenched 10 feet up to his chalk marks hitting the clay pipe with the marks lined in the direction of the sewer pipe at the far end of the trench from where they suspected the break was and never even came close to the break. After not locating the break themselves, plumber's decided to try the spot marked by my friend and doug up his mark on the pavement and they hit the break within 1 foot of the mark and 12 feet from theirs. This was back in 1984.
I couldn't imagine this ever working but my friend not only found the break but was able to map the pipe in the ground position from the house, turn point and down the drive way next to the cinder block wall two feet out from it.
He nailed all of it.
Should not be possible, but it was far from just luck. Everyone including the plumbers were off by 10 to 15 feet. He was dead on the center of the pipe the entire way.

Yep I dig up repair and install water lines, sewer lines, and electrical and use the 2 rod method to find unknown water line locations etx. Works good as long as there is not any other interferance.

For anyone that thinks they may have a leak in the yard.

Find your main shut off valve for the home. (It may be in a basement, crawl space, or a small storage area if your on a slab.)

Turn the valve off, then go to your meter and check to see if the dial is spinning. If it’s a digital meter the last 2 numbers will be going up.

If it’s not then you do not have a outside leak.

Good job Sometimes those valves are tough to turn

You have a big house what if you shut it off for a whole day and come back would it still be flowing Big huses have a lot of water in them to drain

Did you open the valves in the house to allow back pressure to bleed off? If all valves are closed the pressure in the system will continue to push water out of the weakest point like a crack or break. When you open a valve it will still leak out but by water level only. Anypoint higher than the leak will eventually drain until the water in the system is level with the leak height.

I've done this before, had better luck finding where to drill a well than finding leaks. It also works finding underground wires and pipes. Not 100٪, but it works. It helps to have a clear head and nobody bothering you.

Good video. Not sure if you are new to it or not. I've been doing it for over 40 years.
But you still hear the crap from the ignorant people.

Maybe it T's of somewhere are you a single supply or shared or do you have a outside tap separate from the point of entry

Out of curiosity, what watch were you wearing in the video?

Even when you turn the mains tap off you will still get water coming from the leak in the pipe because of back flow from the water already in the house,

Which method is more reliable, using coconut, copper wire or the method they use with battery. Kindly advise
