The math about how much it would take to store 2, 418 games is just multiplying the maximum capacity of a CD (back then ~650MB) by the number of releases. This ignores games that are in multiple discs, revisions to those games, games that are significantly smaller, and the fact that the CD audio is uncompressed. There are official file formats for PlayStation games which compress the CD audio much like MP3/ATRAC3 but even lossless compression should greatly reduce it.

At the same time, on PCs 8 MB RAM was becoming the standard.

Impressive that the PSX could give a similar performance with only a quarter of the memory.
