You need to explain the "negative pressure" of -20 atmospheres.

What did the father tree say to his son when he was ready to move out?

Boy, don’t forget your roots.

You're leaving out the closed water loop that goes up thru the Xylem and goes down through the wood fibers. The weight of the water in both "columns" balances out. The osmotic pressure from the roots and water perspiration by the leaves are then sufficient to circulate the water in the closed loop and to make up for "lost" water.

With the tree perspiring, that’s why the shade underneath a tree is cool on a hot summers day. It’s not just shade, it’s the actual cooled off water vapors that the tree is releasing into the air.

I remember learning this in grammar school. And yes, I'm old enough to refer to grades 1-8 as "grammar school".

What?! Nobody learnt this in elementary biology school anymore? .... Oh, I forgot. We now live in an age where dissecting frogs in school is considered animal cruelty.

... To the current generation of kid, I say good luck dealing with the pressures of later life. We went from dealing with PTSD from Trench warfare, to dealing with PTSD from internet bullying!

Did you know: redwoods can grow so tall that at certain point gravitation forces will surpass osmosis and other forces moving the liquid up. Beyond that point, trees may have to rely on surrounding mist or other water sources.

What an informative peroration on the movement of water in trees. To be sure, a treet indeed.

This is much better than some recent videos. A fascinating subject!

Great video. Just a matter of clarification. Trees and most plants are relying on their roots, yes, but not the root hairs specifically. In the presence of fungi in the soil, the basic fact for trees and most plants, they are not making root hairs. The associated mutualistic (symbiotic) fungi are taking over much of the work of getting increased water uptake and minerals to the plant roots. The water and nutrients are absorbed through plant cell membranes as released by the intimately adjacent fungal cells. The root hairs are not present for this process. But root hairs do function in early stages of plant growth and can act as sites for colonization by the fungi.

2:10 How does negative atmosphere work?
Always thought 0-1 is negative pressure and all over it is overpressure.

It's really interesting how complex trees are but yet we use them for basic things such as a fire or building a house.
