Should explain dog behavior to the kid.
Kid is scared of teeth, let him know dog rely on smell. Let the dog smell him first(back of hand). Then he can pet dog.

A lot of people are scared of my pitbull Bruno cuz he loves to give hugs to people they think that he wants to bite them he actually just wants to play with them people with little dogs get all crazy too they should just let the dogs smell each other's butt and figure it out because it's more problems when people are scared
