Hi. I'm considering purchasing Bishop Wright's commentaries on the New Testament. What is the difference between "N.T. Wright for Everyone" book series and "New Testament For Everyone" book series?

Romans 8:12–13 (NKJV): 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

If you say you have the Spirit, what is your excuse for not putting to death the deeds of the flesh?

Paul is actually arguing in order here. The setup to his "therefore" is having been "delivered through Jesus Christ, our Lord, ...I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin" (ch. 7). Continuing in chapter 8 (there are no chapter divisions in the original text), Paul is distinguishing between two laws in which God's law of justification by faith (explained earlier) has set him free from the condemnations of what he calls "the law of sin and death." Paul then continues with further explanation tying the two laws into the parallel split between flesh and Spirit.

Just found this channel, but have been enjoying your writings for a while. I am studying justification. It seems your way of taking it must be right. In my opinion any other way, makes a "thing" or substance called rightness, or holiness somehow infused. But these are not material terms, so that God does not, , or cannot by FIAT make you Holy. It seems justification is that initial declaration based on covenant, to make the world right in Jesus. Then from there the Lord works in and with us for this " moral " sanctification" I suppose I want to ask if you agree that one of the roots of the problem for not seeing your perspective, is that "they" see sin as an "actual substance" reincarnated in flesh, ( instead of a true moral rebellion from a knowledgeable agent) that must be eradicated by a substance from Jesus called righteousness.
