I think it's pretty common for people to think that if they side with a bully they would be exempt from the abuse. I've seen it in work scenarios, social scenes, families, etc, and people are gobsmacked and blindsided when they get got right along with everyone else. I do believe that there are women who are naive enough to not expect bad treatment from their bully spouses. I've found myself tricked, over my head and invested in terrible situations with bad people when I was younger and inexperienced, and I changed my views and gained perspective after.
