Yes! Shipping makes a difference too! The preorders can be soooo long, lol. And yeah when an indie palette is already as expensive or more than Natasha or whatever else, and then you have to pay $12 or whatever in shipping, pretty soon it’s outrageously expensive. So it’s harder to want to buy the bold fun stuff when I know I’d only wear it a couple of times a year.

While I love a lot of Indie brands, some of my issues with them are sometimes the eyeshadows are too sparkly (I'm Gen X and I like a good standard shimmer a lot of times), the formulas aren't stable enough to last in a palette for years, and there is little an Indie brand can do should something go wrong with manufacturing or shipping.

Some examples:

I have a collection of palettes I keep organized and relatively pristine. I have enough that most of them have only been touched about 5 times (except for my favorites and travel items that get more play). I'm not going to throw them away even if they're years old because they have barely been touched in order to get any germs at all, and I only touch them with clean brushes applying to clean skin. If I come back to a palette and it's falling apart, that's the formula and I can't stand that. Mainstream is usually very stable, Anastasia Beverly Hills being kind of an exception (I'm in a humid state and my shadows have never dried out, but I've heard from lots of people that theirs have 🤷🏼‍♀️).

If a wrong ingredient gets in during manufacture for whatever reason, an Indie brand has little to no way to make restitution to customers that may have been injured, and having shopped Indie several times, I know they are very reluctant to make things right of porch pirates get your package, the USPS delivers it to the wrong house and those people never return it or deliver it properly, or the product arrives shattered. While it only happened twice, I think, firsthand experience has told me it's a stress not worth going through so, now, I'm forced to buy delivery protection just-in-case with every Indie order (another cost I have to factor in). Mainstream, on the other hand, usually has a way to replace recalled products and even get financial compensation (if there are potential damages, like with asbestos in products) and they will send out replacements for shipping problems with little to no fuss.

As far as the offerings of Indie vs Mainstream, a couple reasons Indie doesn't tread into complexion products are:

1. Research and development. Complexion products cost a LOT more to produce just from a standpoint of trying to get the formula right in various shades for various skin types.

2. Risk of backlash if the shade range isn't well received. There have been so many calls to cancel companies over shade ranges that it's a genuine concern because one bad launch can shut down a company.

So, yeah, I'm kind of 50/50 with Indie vs Mainstream. I love the idea of Indie and sometimes they do the most with what they bring, but there are more risks to buying that way.

Hi Miri - I was referring to the packaging because I do feel like it’s too loud mostly and I tend to grab anything that’s more subdued. Even though I own all the PMG motherships and ND palettes & their colors can be colorful but they are more muted colors. I’ll be 40 in 2 months and I don’t see myself going more colorful with my eyes as I get older lol. And the manufacturing - I was referring to quality overall or quality control. I get nervous because I do have sensitive-ish eyes and I try to stick to makeup with manufacturers that I know won’t irritate my skin. ❤

But oddly enough, I love watching indie brand videos because I live vicariously through you all 😊

This was a fun idea to talk about! The person who mentioned the packaging, yes, that too! I find myself liking the higher quality packaging over the cardboard packaged eyeshadow palettes. And I know it’s just makeup and if I want to wear bold and colorful I could, but just because the eyeshadow looks pretty and fun, doesn’t mean it looks flattering on me. And yeah I could say who cares I can wear what I want, but when my kids go to school, I don’t want other kids to tease them that oh my mom saw your mom at the grocery store and your mom wears the crazy makeup. But yeah it’s just makeup at the end of the day and it’s nice there’s a little bit of everything out there so we can all find what we want. As beautiful as the indie palettes always look and the swatches are so cool, I just don’t reach for them very often over my mainstream. Loved this video!

Mainstream for complexion just because I find it all to be the same and I’m cheap lol but indie for eyeshadow because the color stories are more unique and I’m a colorful girly.

Very interesting! I wear makeup for pleasure so it needs to be fun and a great experience using the products. I want the best packaging, the best sparkle, fun color stories and beautiful formulas but it is hard to find a balance. Indie provides the most fun sparkle/color and mainstream provides the best formulas and packaging. I don’t think any brand can consistently give me what I am looking for so I am not loyal to any one brand or price point.
