I think I would start with a five pound bag of rice and a five pound bag of beans. Those two items alone represent quite a few meals. If you have a sterilite container or a five gallon bucket with a lid, you can keep them in there. It will be air tight and safe from bugs, moisture, etc.
Once you have your beans and rice, you can add cans of meat, vegetables, instant potatoes, chunky soup to serve over rice, inexpensive spices. That is how I started building my prepper shelves. I also have a five gallon bucket with a lid that holds items for baking: flour, sugar, yeast, dry milk, baking soda. It is important to keep this items dry so they will keep longer.
Storing up a few cases of ramen is inexpensive too. You can stir fry it with egg and veggies to make it better.

Flour is a good source of protein. Even with nothing else, you can make flat bread/tortillas, and fresh pasta. A little baking powder..you have biscuits and pancakes. A little baking soda..a heartier bread. You can even do a simple pizza crust, or dumplings for a soup or stew.

Great tips. I have a great stockpile. 15 years ago, I started buying only what was on sale or clearance. I plan my meals around that and now I m so glad I did. Thank you for your videos.

Hi, dollar tree 2#bag for 1.25$, pinto beans, and 2 cans of stew, a large container of oatmeal. For about $10. And of course mac&cheese box dinners for about .34 cents, canned tuna. Pretty hearty meals. Thanks for your ideas. I will do what you said. Get a little at a time. Always check your sales papers. And your store coupons for the best possible deals.

Excellent tips, Lynn! I’m now doing crockpot batch cooking weekly and freezing meals for the next 2 months. It’s a technique and process.

Your $5 spending suggestion is excellent. I also pay for this separately in order to identify this as a stockpile receipt. (I’m a retired accountant, age 73 and this is how I track and identify this)

Yes, I think in terms of meals and recipes.

I feed my husband, me, a German Shepherd. Don’t forget to stockpile pet food. We need to think about our extended family members!

My Harris Teeter has weekly specials: Week 1 = veggies 37-44 cents a can; Week 2 = beans 37-39 cents a can;; Week 3 = dozen eggs 77-99 cents; Week 4 = flour/sugar/butter cheap price. Walmart sells brown rice for $.70lb. Walgreens/CVS/grocery stores have can tuna and salmon on sale $1. Good deals are out there!

You can start at a food pantry also.
Then add to whatever they offer you. Here they give alot of fresh item's as well as staples. Even laundry detergent, toilet paper etc. It's a HUGE help... And it will allow you to pay for the thing's to "Add" onto what they offered.
Even if you go only a few times, it's a start...
I'm 63, Yes I use them when I need to... There's no shame in this whatsoever 💞
You do what is necessary to take care of the family... Period!

Three and a half years ago, I started out with cheap Mexican pasta. They sell it on the international aisle in the Mexican section at most Walmart stores. It was 24 cents for a 7 ounce package. Now, it is 42 cents Then I added cheap tomato sauce to go with it. Next, I got some cheap jars of bouillon cubes. After that I got started on dehydrated vegetables. I like to use Dehydrated minced onion when I cannot get fresh onions.I found Knorr SOPA which is a low cost dried soup pouch and paid 40 cents each in building up my stock. Now it is 60 cents each. I regularly buy canned meat and I try to purchase it at $1 or less per can. Knorr sides were $1 each, but are now $2. I tried the generic form of the sides but it did not work for me. I keep building up and I have passed several years supply based on what I use. For example, I use around 7 ounces of pasta each month but I have 116 pounds in my various pantries.

I have powdered, cartons, cans and jars of various sauces for my pasta. And I am adding more to make sure that I have enough. I have a variety of other things for my food storage.

Slowly, I built up 4 mini food storage spaces. I live in 4 room farmhouse which is about 320 square feet. I worked hard for what I have.

I became good at prepping on a budget as I only had $10 a week for groceries. And do not qualify for assistance as I do not have utility bills.

With the rising prices, I cannot afford to buy groceries unless I save up.

Lynn! You inspire so many! I save meat bones for bone broth in my freezer. If I roast a chicken, the remains bones are stored in freezer. Same with beef or pork. I also save vegetable scraps the same way. Making a bone broth is simple using the bones & vegetables, water and a Tblsp of vinegar. Simmer for at least 5 hours. Strain the broth. Simple and economical if you plan ahead. Add rice, quinoa, noodles, pasta... if you like. Hope Graham is doing well!

my sister would take a giant ziplock bag(gallon or larger) and put the 3 meals for the day in 1 bag including drink sticks..example she had family of 3. so breakfast was oatmeal packets. lunch was a box of mac cheese and can of tuna. supper was a bag of noodles a can of chicken, bouillon cubes, and 1 can veg, a instant potatoes pouch..drinks were instant coffee sticks and flavor koolaid sticks she added in snack sized bags of creamer and sugars, salt and pepper...this way she just grabbed a bag for the day and no thinking about menu they ate what was in the bag. then she would shop again and reuse the big bag for next menu..she made up these bags and sat them in a tote..intended for food pantry stash, but on more than one occasion it saved her biscuit in a financial situation

another good use for pancake mix is to make a bunch and use as a bread substitute. can make sweet or savory.

I really enjoyed watching your show, I have never seen it before. When I started prepping 2 years ago, it was the first time I was exposed to this lifestyle. I watched this type of program. I made lists, many, many lists 😂 as I could afford items I would buy them and check it off. I now have a very full pantry, and I rest much better.
