Yup.. but if they are hybrids you will end up with a very strange plant ( I know from experience ) LOL. Also the more deeply the flower was fertilized by bees will give you a deeper black color at one of the seed ends. Don't plant if no black is present and plant the deepest black ones you have. The fatter the seed pod is the more it was fertilized. I LOVE MARIGOLDS!!!! Thanks for sharing!

I haven’t bought marigolds in years, I save the seeds and every year I’m always left with way more seeds than I need! And of course, I always find a few surprise volunteers every year as well; I just leave ‘em be and let them do their thing. :)

Be warned, the seed pods can go moldy if the weather has been unusually wet like it was this year where I am on the east coast. This can lead to the seeds sprouting uselessly inside the pods, which means you cannot save them, as drying them out will kill the sprouts. I still managed to save thousands of marigold seeds due to how pest resistant and prolific the plants are, but don't fret if you can't save them all.

I’m definitely saving even more than usual next fall. Chickens love them and they’re a natural dewormer.
Actually I give them the whole plant before drying and also after for winter. ❤

Do they have to be winterized? How do you plant them?

Well, I Guess I did it wrong then. I just left the plant in the garden without deadheading or anything because I heard they would naturally drop their seeds and germinate next spring. I live in 6a so it's probably too cold. Anyway, the flowers stayed on through October without anything getting hard. Oh well. There's always next year, right? 😉

But they won't grow if they're left outside in freezing temps will they? I brought some in this year.

They kind of look like chewed up sunflower seed pods

Those seeds that Luke showed weren't the best example. They should be a lot blacker. The greyish black seeds aren't the best seeds to germinate. The darker the better. I've saved many marigold seeds in my day

Why have I known this for 30+ years but still buy marigolds every year?

Can’t look at these the same since that viral lady who got a seed stuck in her mouth.

Don’t buy at all; this isn’t Europe or Africa; use native plants!!
