This is a quick and effective way to get a pipe under a driveway or sidewalk

It should be a Code requirement to run pre-position conduit under driveway and sidewalks. A simple 3” pvc pipe sealed on the ends with duct tape. If you are building a home I advise you to do that. I did. And it saved me immeasurable headache.

The problem with this method is thew water will undermining the gravel/soil under the driveway or sidewalk which can lead to sagging and eventually cracking. I suggest to renting and utilizing the proper boring equipment it might save you thousands in repairs down the road.

What about doing the water with a 1” or 2” PVC, and pound the final 3” through?

Let me tell you why this is dumb. This creates a path for water to flow through seeing how you were running water to flow through it.
The best way to do this is to cut some teeth on some 3-in PVC and bang it straight under the driveway. Horizontal to the ground about 2 ft down and use a hammer. It'll act like he saw and pull dirt out. And will not decompress the ground around the pipe. Or create pass for water to flow through.
