What they don't tell you he is the component right behind the bit is called a housing. The housing has a bend in it 2 degrees or so and houses what is called a saund which sends a signal to the surface. The signals picked up by the locator which shows you a clock if you will 12 o clock being up three o clock being left 9 o clock being right and six o clock of being down. The bit is connected to an inner rod which spins all the time. The housing is connected to the outer rod which is turned to the needed Direction. The cuttings or spoils are removed by pumping mud through the pipe and pushed out around the outside of the boring pipe which is called returns. That's about as simple of an explanation as you can get.

Thank YOU! I have looked at many HDD videos and have never found an explanation of how they are And I think that is what most lay people want to understand....

This the third video I've watched trying to find out how the drill bit is steered. Thank you for explaining.

Finally got it! Well shown and explained and easy to understand! So it is simply not just a matter of boring, but depending of the type of formation use high pressure flow of the fluid in softer formations and in harder formation make use of the bend and also use the high pressure fluid and drill together. Very nice, straightforward and informative. 👌👌👍😉
Look forward to see how the last part of the drill looks above ground.
Thanks a lot you guys

The visual is excellent and gives clarity to the verbal description.

Great video, reminded me of all the old military training films we had to watch!

This movie is the best about horizontal directional drilling technology

That's amazing, I didn't know such technology existed. Man.

This is awesome, especially when you start at about 5k ft., or deeper, and drill a mile in either direction, before descending vertical again.

Most of the questions I see are about how the cut up chunks, called cuttings in the drilling world, are brought back to surface. The short answer is that the special drilling fluid that is pushed out the end of the bit in the video has a high enough viscosity to pick up all of the particles and carry them back to surface on the outside of the drill pipe.

So THAT'S how it's done. Awesome!

The Horizontal Directional Drill knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the Horizontal Directional Drill from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the Horizontal Directional Drill is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the Horizontal Directional Drill must also know where it was.
The Horizontal Directional Drill guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the Horizontal Directional Drill has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

Happening on my street right now to install fiber backbone. Wondered how it worked and this explained it!

One of the directional drill operators here mentioned that this may be the future of sulfide ore mining - low impact, backfilled with neutralizing cement powder and waste rock, very little mess. We've got the gold here, but mining must advance with the times.

The drill system is based off of a clock, the driller and locater have screens in which they watch the clock, the percentage, projected depth and the direction they are drilling. 12 o clock is straight up, 6 o clock is down, 3 o clock left and 9 o clock right and so on.
