I've soaked the mechanism in WD-40 in hopes the offending parts will now work properly. I also investigate the stabilizer arm since it's through the position of the arm that the record player knows there's a record to play. I start checking out the electronics and the dead left channel.

When you bent the arm down, you put more pressure against the records, Likely the reason why it dropped them all that time. That mechanism looks really cheap for the time period, and likely never worked properly even when new. But the bad thing about mechanics, to properly service lubrication stiction, the entire thing has to be completely torn down into its individual bits and then all the shafts and bearing surfaces cleaned. Then lubricated, and reassembled piece by piece. Not worh the effort and time, but thats how it is.

there are alot of slide surfaces, nooks, crannies, and bearing areas that lubrication and solvents just cant get into unless its "dipped"
