The Nissan Juke pioneered the compact crossover segment when it launched over a decade ago. This second-generation model retains the funky styling but adds extra interior space and practicality. It's now based on the same platform as the Renault Clio, bringing improvements to ride comfort and interior quality.

Visually, the new Juke has evolved rather than revolutionised the distinctive styling of its predecessor. Prominent wheel arches, a high waistline and bulging headlights remain, but details like the split LED running lights modernise the look. It retains plenty of road presence for a small crossover.

Inside, the quirky design has been toned down. There are still unusual shapes and textures, but higher-grade materials provide a more upmarket ambience. Passenger space is much improved over the old model, with generous rear legroom and a 50% larger 422-litre boot. The hybrid's underfloor battery pack cuts that to 354 litres.

Nissan launched the Juke with a 112hp 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. It's eager enough when extended but suffers from slow off-boost response at low revs. A smooth six-speed manual gearbox is standard, with the option of a jerky seven-speed dual-clutch auto.

The new Juke Hybrid pairs a 93hp 1.6-litre petrol with twin electric motors for a total of 143hp. It delivers stronger acceleration and a more linear power delivery. The bespoke transmission keeps the engine in its sweet spot, delivering a relaxed driving experience.

Ride comfort and handling balance have both improved over the previous model. The firmer suspension delivers agile handling with nicely weighted steering, while small bumps are well cushioned. Road noise is more intrusive than some rivals, however.

In base Visia spec, the Juke starts from £14,935, significantly undercutting rivals like the Ford Puma and Skoda Kamiq. Higher-grade Tekna cars include a Bose sound system, leather seats and a suite of active safety aids. The Hybrid starts from £27,250.

While not outstanding in any one area, the Nissan Juke combines funky styling, good practicality and confident handling at an affordable price. For buyers who value design flair in a compact crossover package, it remains one of the most appealing choices.
