My biggest complaint right now is the students pulling "no shows" and students are not reprimanded for it. Lately when I have students do this to me I just hide their profiles because I dont have the patience for this behavior. Also, these students dont even message me saying that they are sorry.

I also get annoyed when I'm scheduled to work 10 more minutes but a student who wants 30 or even 60 minutes calls. Very annoying, especially when that means I lose my lunchtime that I was looking forward to. So I try to make sure I check the box that says I will be logging off at the end of this particular hour. Some students pay attention to that and only a few don't but it's better than not checking the box.

Also, if we don't want to teach beginners, I heard that we shouldn't write "No Beginners" in our profile because search engines will pick up the word "Beginner" and then you're more likely to get those students. So write something like "Intermediate and Advanced Students only."

I thought your critique was wishy washy in that you came across as noncommitted to either pro or con. For example when it comes to time-remaining and last minute calls, how would more information allow for prejudice. If you had something personal scheduled and you receive a 30 or 60 minute call what then? Do you tell the student you can only tutor for 10 minutes and risk getting a low rating which is usually the case. Also you did not go into the unfair rating system. Quality tutors get raked over the coals by devious or uncaring students when they rate low but still continue to call that tutor. As for pay, it's like any other company in this capitalistic world: if you can get away with serf-labor then companies will do it. 10 dollars is a pittance when it comes to the millions or more that companies like Cambly make. They can afford to pay much more and attract quality tutors. Or at best pay according to qualifications and experience. And this is not only applicable to Cambly but to every other ESL platform out there.

I have a question, do you only get paid for priority hrs if no one calls, or is it for all callers, what is the difference between paid callers and all callers? Thank you!!!!

Is it true that students can record you without your permission?

Hi Daesha, Thanks for this content, I appreciate the truth and reality of what you shared.
I applied to tutor adults in November 2021. When I look on my profile to see if there is any updates or responses from Cambly, the message I see is "your profile is under review". I'm a new tutor, will be obtaining my tefl certificate in the Spring so that I can work with other online English tutoring schools and platforms.
I want to learn to speak Portuguese (European), I'm an US citizen. Have checked out materials from my library, the Pimsleur method and children's dvds.
What advice and suggestions for me as a tutor and which affordable online, books, etc.. do I use that you know about and can recommend? Thank you.

Cancellations and No Show from students = No $$$ for teachers waiting in the past. Students needs to be put on notice for these types of inconsistencies just like teachers. Until then, teachers will utilize the BLOCKING features for students who refuses to respect teachers' time.
However, within 30 days of me writing this, teachers have just received a recent email stating that they could wait for their student for 10 minutes, log off and still get paid. Check your PAYPAL account for that. The proof will be in the bank. lol. Another thing is, it is only $10 per hour ONLY IF you have a student. However, it is $5.00 and some change, I believe per student per 30 minutes and less if the student wants a lesson for 15 minutes. This needs to change immediately.

Hi Teach Daesha, thanks for the content! Looking into getting into Cambly because I live aborad now :). Do you think now is still a good time to sign up for Cambly? I'm kind of worried about not being able to get classes, I actually have no teaching experience but work well with kids and casual conversation.

There is a button that we can engage which would notify the student that we’re leaving after the end of the hour

But maybe that’s new?
