I've been thinking about those big drills, I think the torque load of drill could be controlled by a spring loaded system on the actual drill body, that instead allows the spring to deflect the excess torque caused by binding of the drill, carpenter's are the same as every one else, they enjoy a good laugh at work, it may be at your expense, get used to it as you'll be doing the job for the next 30 years. When you've eaten too much crap, speak up for yourself, a jobsite is the real world, none of us will just let someone dump on us forever, don't be rude, but stand up for yourself. Life on the site will calm down, dirt is your friend, and if you ever get a sideways look, know what you did to make the money and that you are doing work others will never understand, even though it might be the roof covering their house. Peace

There is dozens of cons, i could ramble for paragraphs endlessly. If you can build a house, pack up everything and build in the wilderness before you are 35 years old. You will not regtet it, trust me. After 30 years as a carpenter, the horrible stories only get worse as you age...

Not to mention…. Freezing cold, high winds, hot temperatures, & rain if you’re going to be working outside

I was terminated from the carpentry apprenticeship program going into my second year, due to letting the bad he say he say get to me. Ion play them type games, I get work done. The disrespectful comments that was being said I wanted to react but I couldn’t and it messed with my mental health to where I missed two days of class n 3 days of work that when they sent a letter through mail terminating me. I learn from it and will be back soon. Btw great video brother 💯

I have a superintendent very aggressive, old school. I’ve taken alot, but also learned to control situations by slowing down my voice and tone when situations are high tension.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm currently looking for a new job after being out of work for a while. I like designing, making and fixing things and have enjoyed doing basic woodwork so I thought about learning carpentry. What puts me off is the thought of injuries, not being able to cope with the physical demands, early starts as I'm more of a night owl, and men being rude, sexist and aggressive. I experienced bullying in past jobs and it definitely messed with my mental health, it's a shame to hear there tends to be bullying and aggression in the trades. By the way you have a really good calm, professional manner. You'd make a great mentor, coach and manager.

We had a new guy come in years ago and he was wearing True Religion jeans... I'm not sure if those are still a thing but they were like a fancy, $200-a-pair brand of jeans. I said man I'd wear something else from now on if I were you and he said he only wears those. Dirty didn't work for him and he quit after a couple days but oh well everybody is different.

Great advice on dealing with callous personalities in the trades, I've always considered their to be 3 major life pathways into concrete work
1. A felony
2. Military Service
3. Immigrating from Mexico
If you're lucky, all your coworkers are Mexican dads who can barely speak to you but are polite when they do. Otherwise you're stuck with assholes who have only ever had to deal with worse assholes throughout their life and you just gotta buck up and adapt.

I was a carpenter for 6 years
I loved work.. and happy i did it. I overcame my laziness and learn good work ethic.
But I eventually gave it up.
I realized the whole time almost nobody was willing to really teach me what was going on.
Found myself onstantly treated like an underling and disrespected. Being surrounded by guys that literally hated their job and used that hate as motivation to work hard, regardless if I was down range or not.
Many of them were drunk or high and lacked the social skills to communicate without being rude
Little respect was given to the works just slam it together and get it done.

So long story short don't be a carpenter in big cities. 15-45 mins gets me to the next town over where I live.

I like doing this because I'm 15 still in high school in canada and I've competed at provincial competition for carpentry and cabinet making this year.

I am commenting after you said about commute!

Right there! Is what stopping me from being a Carpenter! I hate driving and I fear of driving because I almost got into a few car crashes while driving. so I quit and now take pubic transit to get anywhere.

Because you cant bring tools on pubic transit and it doesnt take you right to the job site. sometimes the site is no where close to transit.

Currently going through it with my career paths rn. I’m currently studying interior design but it’s not working out. I am fit 25 year old guy who’s done general labour work at 16-17 years old. later I worked in commercial kitchens while in high school until almost 2 year ago. Now I work in a plumbing supply showroom and don’t know what to do. Ive gained skills in sales and some plumbing knowledge but, I’m thinking about carpentry as a career because I love being creative and using my hands (I refurbish furniture as a side hustle). I haven’t really done a lot of labour intensive work in a long time and, I’m trying to figure out the right trade for me. Top two is carpentry, plumbing. Based of what I’ve said I just need some suggestions or resources to look into before committing to a path.

I'm a residential framer. I keep my guard on my saw pinned 100% of the time. Most saws have blade brakes which stop the blade within a couple seconds. As for taking a hammer drill to the face... Bro why was your face in the way of the drill? Lol keep the content. Found you through nomadic ink back when you had James on

One danger you could add is uncontrollable variables such as unintentional negligence or inexperience of new guys on site, I can't count how many times I've seen guys get hurt on a scaffold that's passed inspection from not knowing how to properly conduct themselves on it or they altered and area and didn't flag things off properly.
