WHY YOU NEED TO THINK BEFORE YOU BUY: Chanel vs Dior CLASSIC INVESTMENT BAGS

preview_player

The Chanel 2.55 Reissue, Classic Flap and the Lady Dior – these are all pretty “classic” and “safe” bags to buy, along with Hermes of course!
But there are a few things that I think you should WAIT and evaluate/be aware of before you make your purchase. This is especially for those of you who want a ‘once in a lifetime’ bag (where you only want to buy and own one). Or even those of you who want to own just a small collection of safe, long-term investment items (financial and wearability)

So which do I think is best and why? In this I’m going to cover a brief history of the CHANEL 2.55, CHANEL CLASSIC FLAP & CHANEL 2.55 REISSUE. As well as the popular LADY DIOR.
I’m then going to talk about some pretty big things that are think are worth you factoring-in before you drop your hard earned money:

Which brand is best?
Which is best for financial investment?
Is there a best colour to buy?
Does the size I choose matter?
Enjoy!

Sophie I was young, working at my first grown up job, and newly married in the 80s. Everything was possible. It was the era of the working girl. Women wore suits that came from male clothing lines like Brooks Brothers but worn with silk blouses.Handbags were just becoming a status item. You were trying to look successful but also serious. Logos were discreet compared to now.

It's like listening to a bedtime story. I like the Dior for its personality.

I much prefer Dior, the experience is so different to that of Chanel. Dior boutiques are gorgeous, the experience screams luxury, and their bags are so much more chic imo. Chanel puts out the same things over and over again and the quality of their bags and constant price increases are insane. I don’t purchase my bags with the intention to sell, so resale value isn’t top of mind to me.

I prefer the lady Dior but agree Chanel classic flap definitely has better resale value Xx

I have displayed my Medium & Jumbo Chanel bags on a shelf in my bedroom. Every day, I get a real joy from looking at them! 😍 My justification? Well, If I framed the cash or simply displayed the cash that I used to buy these bags, would I enjoy looking at the cash as much?! No! 😃😂😅 Ding! They're worth it.

Great points of view! I was debating this for a while and ended up getting a lady Dior (the myabcdior one). I was waiting for a Chanel mini but it's so hard to find and I lost my patience waiting for it and seeing the prices keep going up. So glad I got my lady Dior! No games or BS and it's gorgeous. I love mine!

Hi Sophie. My favourite youtuber for sure. I like the way you analysed these 2 brands fairly and thank you for the brief history as well. These are the type of videos that are needed on youtube, where one can learn about these luxury products, and really think well before making a purchase, therefore not regret making impulse purchases. Great video

I loved this video- and especially about the underneath flap pocket on the channel classic flap for her love notes 🧡💕 That bit of history behind the product makes it so much more meaningful!

"... backed into a corner..." - thank you for being so honest and pragmatic. Tough times can hit almost anyone at any time and HAVE hit many of us recently. The world seems so destabilized. I haven't seen any other handbag videos even approaching the topics of economics or personal financial status.

I started working full time in 1981 so I was out of school, really glad to see the back of that, and on the loose in the world for the first time and I had an absolute ball. The world was a very different place back then, a lot more secure. You could always be sure of getting a job because there were more jobs than people and you could walk in and out of them whenever you chose. I bought my first car and traveled a lot. It was a really fun time to be young.
I loved the fashions too. Of course some were over the top and too out there for me, but I loved the pastel coloured suits, floral dresses and silk blouses.
I was a teenager in the 70s which was a truely ugly era. Younger people now who say they love the 70s fashions would think very differently if they had had to live through them. Fashion as a matter of personal choice and finding your own style like people do today was completely unacceptable.back then. It was totally dictatorial. You wore what was in and if you didn’t you were labeled a dag and punished for it. Individuality was definitely not encouraged. I remember being addicted to classic movies and constantly complaining to my mother, why aren’t we allowed to wear pretty, feminine clothes anymore? Then along came Princess Diana and everything suddenly changed. People now have no idea how powerful her influence was. Pretty and feminine were back in and I really made the most of it. I became totally addicted to Laura Ashley floral dresses. They were very similar to the sort that Dolce And Gabana make now. Lilysilk make very 80s inspired blouses, they were everywhere back then.
And money went so much further. I used to fill up the petrol tank in my first car for $5 and gold was worth around $100 an ounce, so most of my friends and family, and of course myself, travelled to South East Asia every year for what was a very cheap holiday and bought heaps of fine jewellery. I suppose you can tell I really loved living in the 80s.

You brought up some brilliant points that personally really hit home, Sophie. Love that you’re genuinely encouraging people to wait, really think about their purchase habits, and giving everyone an incredible history lesson in the process!

I also don’t think that self-preserving voice in my head (when it comes to saving for a rainy day) will ever really go away b/c of how I was brought up. The ‘investment and longevity aspect’ of buying bags will inevitably influence my purchases b/c of that. Also, I do love that the 2.55 reissue in particular reads to me as understated luxury. As someone who gravitates towards utilitarian bags like Celine’s classic, Fendi’s peekaboo, and Loewe’s puzzle... I think either the 2.55 or Classic Flap feels like my jam. Adore the utilitarian compartments too!
