FOR DYNZELL SIGERS, becoming part of the 6ft club has changed every aspect of his life. "The world is a much different place now that I'm taller," Dynzell said. "People smile at me everywhere I go. I've never had this kind of reaction from people before and I really enjoy it." The 27-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia, spent around $100,000 on limb lengthening surgery to "grow" from 5ft 5" to 6ft after feeling unhappy about his height for his whole life. The costly and extremely painful operation involves cutting the thigh bones in each leg and inserting rods inside them. It also takes a long time to heal - the patient isn't expected to regain their mobility until 6 to 12 months later. "I would personally not recommend it to just anyone," Dynzell added. "This is something that takes a lot of mental fortitude because there were so many nights that I wanted to quit. So I say come as mentally strong as you can." Today Dynzell is going on his first-ever date after the surgery. "I'm very excited for this opportunity to get out there and feel out this new version of me. Like see how he interacts with the world. See how he interacts on a date."

It’s sad that we live in a world. That other people’s validation means more then your health.

I hope he is able to walk fully normally again eventually. He will realize being perceived as physically different, especially disabled, is way harder than being short.

Dear comments,

Please stop gaslighting men. Tall people ARE treated differently and you KNOW it.

I can understand why he did it. However I can't get my head around why his friend did it, he was already 6ft. I wish them both the best in their recovery.

But now he walks like he's on stilts...

Any height above the ground is better than 6 feet under.

It's so rare to see a man have insecurities like this and admit it. He's a very good lookin guy and it's a bummer that people made fun of his height. Though he seems to be happy. I wish him well.

Jumping from 5’5 to 6’0 is definitely pushing the limit, I feel like the human body could adjust to 2 maybe 3 inches without to much problem. But that big of jump might have some complications down the road, just hope he gets his full range of motion back.

I'm skeptical that people smile at him more solely because of his height. I believe his negative self-perception before might have influenced how he interpreted others' reactions towards him. Now that he has a ‘better’ self-perception, he’s interpreting others’ behaviour as more positive, when perhaps it’s been that way all along.

He seems to be in pain, his walking gait just looks painful.

Having had multiple ankle surgeries, including an external fixator, I would NEVER recommend this to ANYONE unless absolutely necessary (as in my case, for severe arthritis, pain management). However he is incredibly strong for going through that, whatever the reason. Men DEF get judged by their height, so no shade to you sir. Glad you are ok and happy with the end result!

I was smiling ear to ear on their date hoping it to go well, but every time he walks I’m scared he’s going to fall over. 😮

This man looks like he’s in constant pain!! I feel for him. I know he’s taller, but you can tell his walk is off, and he’s hurting. I know that look!

I’m trippin off homeboy that was already 6 foot but got the surgery to be 6’6. I guess insecurity comes in all sizes. Very interesting.

I'm pleased for you however it saddens me people have to go to these lengths to feel accepted in society.

The things he says about how he was treated are true. I'm also 5'5''. I signed up to a dating site. It's was an annoying process so I gave up right after posting my pictures. 5 days later when I came back to finish up, I already had 400 messages. As soon as I added words and put in my height, every single one of those women disappeared. Even the really short ones lol. That's was my most concrete experience with height discrimination to date. It is a real thing.
