Pro Photos Using a Budget Studio Lighting Kit | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Can a kit of three flashes that cost less than the price of one higher-end studio flash actually be any good? Well, the answer might surprise you! Photographer Gavin Hoey swaps his usual Flashpoint Pro lights and heavy-duty light stands for the BLAZ300 3 flash kit that ships with three compact light stands, a couple of softboxes, and a basic wireless transmitter.

Of course, the best way to test any new lights is but using them on a photo session, so Gavin has three different lighting looks in mind that make use of one, two, and then three flashes.

Starting with a simple one-flash portrait lighting technique, Gavin moves on to show how two lights, and the included softboxes, can give a very dramatic low-key split lighting look.

Finally, Gavin goes all out with a three-light portrait. As Gavin explains, more lights mean you’ll need more time to check they are all mixing together. But once set up, Gavin adds his signature final ingredient… lots of smoke!

Before I watch this I would like to thank Gavin and his crew for making this. I am sat at home having been told to stay at home from work today due to the storm "Ciaran" I live in Guernsey one of the Channel Islands right in the eye of the storm in the English Channel. We are safe but the Island has seen a lot of damage and so has our sister Island of Jersey :( So to be able to watch this and maybe a few of Gavin's other videos will make the day seem that little bit bet better. So thank you again Gavin and all the people at Adorama who make this youtube channel what it is.

I have no desire to work with a model in a studio, except when I'm watching one of Gavin's videos. Then it looks like a lot of fun. :)

I'm shopping for a small retirement home this year, and while it's not a top priority, I keep an eye out for places that might have room for home studio. I'm handy with the DIY, and a small studio could be a fun project to build and use.
