Student behavior in the classroom is a two sided coin:
-Learning cannot occur if a student behavior is out of control... BUT
-Students deeply engaged in learning are less likely to act out!
Some of the reasons why students misbehave include 1) trying to camouflage unpreparedness with misbehavior, 2) not being involved and getting distracted, 3) seeking attention due to poor social skills or low self-esteem (Danielson, 2007, pg. 71). In an effective classroom, it is important for the teacher to implement agreed upon standards and clearly explain consequences for not meeting standards. An effective teacher has his/her students help in setting and maintaining the classroom standards of behavior. Students should be able to explain these agreed-upon standards. They must always feel valued, cared for, and respected, even if they are misbehaving.
