Carry-on packing tips for toiletries and liquids. TSA 3-1-1 airport security rules updated for 2024.

In this video, I will explain in detail TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, which outlines the guidelines for packing liquids in your carry-on luggage. Additionally, I will provide you with some useful packing tips and hacks that will help you breeze through airport security with no problems.

If you're not familiar with TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, it means that you can only carry liquids, gels, and aerosols in containers that are 3.4 ounces (25 milliliters) or less per item. These containers must be placed in a clear, quart-sized bag, and each passenger is only allowed one bag. You'll learn exactly what you can and can't put in a TSA approved liquids bag.

I am not a fan of the liquid restrictions. On the other hand, it does force me to bring less and by extension make my bags lighter. And I get to try out new things because I always bring samples.

Your point about not bringing any liquids through security greater than 100 mls, but then you can buy whatever size liquid you want and take it on the plane is bang on - I have never understood the logic 🤷‍♀️

Yes, you can't bring over 3.4 oz through security, but feel free to spend once through security and bring those with you on the plane. Nice job pointing that out Megan!!

What I don’t understand is that they won’t let you bring in a 4 oz bottle water but inside the gates you can buy all the waters you want and stuff them in your carry on!

Normally when I travel, I generally just buy the toiletries i need at the place I'm going to (if I can, which is usually not a problem in most domestic locations and even to developed countries overseas). It also means it's less that I have to carry with me in my carry-on or checked bag and less risk of stuff leaking. Of course I just get the travel sized items when I get to my destination (not a huge bottle of shampoo or whatever), or in some cases I'll just use what's provided at the hotel as this doesn't cost anything extra (even spare toothbrushes and toothpaste in many cases, as many major hotel chains have these items too in case you "forget" yours, although bringing at least toothpaste and a toothbrush is helpful just inc ase they don't or you aren't near a plce where you can pick one up -- although airports do have these in their conveinence stores. I guess it does make sense tha they don't allow large quantities of liquids or beverages past security as they probably can't test all of them to determine if they are in fact what they should be, so it's just easier for them to ban them all together and make you buy them at the airport instead but I think they should adjust this and let you bring, say, a 20 oz bottle of pop, but it would be subject to random testing if requested (testing to ensure it's actually pop and not some potentially harmful liquid). But perhaps this would slow things down so they just don't allow it.

I believe one other exception to the liquid rule too, that is fairly new (at least since COVID) is hand sanitizer. I think (or at least I thought someone told me) you could bring a bottle with you but they don't really check the size (providing it's reasonable, and not a 2 gallon jug of hand sanitizer). Maybe that is still under the same restriction as other fluids even though most hand sanitizer is in gel form too.

One hack someone told me about (not that this matters) is that you could try to bring frozen fluids through TSA, although they may be cracking down on this, and modified the rules to state that anything that is normally in a liquid form cannot be bought through security (say you froze a juice box, that would be classified as a liquid even if it's frozen for example).

They strictly force the quart size bag rule in Europe, I bring extra in the US with no issue all the time, but not in Europe.

If you have to change planes in another country, you may have to go through security again. If so, any liquids you may have purchased before boarding your first flight have to fit within the 3-1-1 rule. If not, they will have to be left behind at security.

I went through Security at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok recently and then they had another checkpoint at the boarding gate and checked all liquids again. Anyone who had drinks, water etc had them confiscated, so it is a good idea to check if you have a second checkpoint before purchasing stuff after you get through security.

When on US domestic flights or a flight from US to MX, they let me take ice in my metal water bottle as long as I drink any melt before I go through. Such was not the case, however, as I passed through TSA at the Cancun airport coming back to the US. Mexican TSA made me dump the ice.

Get a signed note next time you go to your doctor or dermatologist and state it’s medically necessary. I do this with sunscreen and aloe gel. tsa allowed it through because I brought the note. No one deserves cancer!

I have a general idea of baggie size, but can you please measure the TSA one for me? (if possible?)
Knowing what they use will help me buy something sturdy without risking going over. Ty
