How to find the surface area of a cone

👉 Learn how to find the volume and the surface area of a cone. A cone is a 3-dimensional object having a circular base and round surface converging at a single point called its vertex (or apex). The vertical distance from the circular base of a cone to its vertex is called the height of the cone while the distance from any point on the circumference of the circular base of a cone to its vertex is called the slant height or the slant length of the cone. A cone is said to be a right cone if the vertex of the cone is directly above the center of its circular base. A right cone has a uniform slant height.

The volume of a cone is given by one-third the area of its circular base multiplied by its height (the vertical distance between its base and the vertex). i.e The volume of a cone is given by 1/3 * pi * r^2 * h, where r is the radius of its circular base and h is its height. The total surface area of a cone is given by pi*r(r + l), where r is the radius of its circular base and l is its slant height.

You’re telling me it only took a grand total of 1:43 minutes for me to understand this when I was ripping my hair out struggling to understand my math teacher for an hour on zoom

If anyone's wondering, the reason it's _π r l_ is that this formula is actually based off of the one for the surface area of a cone.

That formula is _(1/2)pl. (p meaning perimeter, and l meaning length)_

The perimeter of the cone's circle is its circumference, which has the formula _2 π r_

So, when we multiply 1/2 times 2, it cancels out leaving us with 1, hence _1π r l_.

Hope this helps anyone who was confused like me! :)

Thank you so much! You made this equation sooo much easier! I’m in Yr 8 and at the top of my grade for math and I couldn’t let my grades slip so THANK YOU for making this equation soo much easier for me! I had no idea that calculating the lateral area of a cone could be simplified so much!
