-Hagar vs. Eddie: Dueling Solos with a Legend (a breakdown)
Saw this concert on video when I was very young. I forgot about the dueling guitar solos so I just had to break this one down..

Thanks!!!

I was butt hurt because my mom wouldn’t let me see the 1984 tour with Diamond Dave because I was too young. So I went to the 5150 tour just so I could see EVH in the flesh, and not expecting much from Sammy, but it was a hell of a show. They killed it.

Not only is Sammy a great player, he's one of the greatest vocalist in the history of rock, and a great guy, the total package!

Live Without A Net is such an amazing show, I don't think I've ever seen a band have so much fun on stage! I also love the little vocal-guitar trade off they do before Best Of Both Worlds, with Eddie imitating Sammy's vocal runs. Great stuff.

Live Without a Net was nearly a daily ritual growing up in that era. My brother and I wore out that VHS tape trying to emulate our heroes! While the guitar playing from both Ed and Sammy was excellent in their own ways, they made it look fun and effortless. Thanks for the breakdown! 👏👏👏🤘🤘

I was impressed with Sammy's solos. They say that when you play with someone great it ups your game.

You have to keep in mind that even though EVH was the Maestro, he was greatly influenced by Montrose and often mentioned his love for them in his interviews. Sammy was held in high respect by EVH because of Montrose. These two were great because of mutual love/respect.

One of my favorite memories of the 5150 show was Sammy and Eddie's "duel", with the rule..."You gotta use a pick" and Sammy running across the stage yelling...."YOU'RE CHEATING!!"

Sammy playing the guitar himself and taking a solo every now and then only added to the diversity within the band. Because he played guitar, he definitely knew what he was talking about as far as the music was concerned. Knowing how to play helped the band write better songs. It was a win for everybody!

Probably one of, if not the best concert videos of all time. This version of One Way To Rock tops them all, even the original. Nice break down.

I wanted to hate van hagar, I really did, but they made some great music. Sammy is a great guitarist and brought a lot of his own style, raw, but polished. I didn't think it would work, how do you put two talents like that together and make it work, but they did. And by the way, damn you can play.

This was peak VH imo. Eddie was absolutely at his peak. Sammy’s voice was top notch. And there is NO circumstance where it seems they’re all having any more fun than this show. It’s such a shame their relationship soured. They were awesome together. I know they patched up a bit before the end, thankfully. I wish the world got to see them play together again.

Eddie actually did play well with others. It's hard to find, but Eddie did an album with Brian May called Star Fleet Project, and the two of them sounded great together.

What was witnessed was two pro guitar players working well together. Obviously EVH is the man. Sammy is no slouch by any means. Great solos all the way around. Honestly, I prefer 2 guitar bands, much fuller sound. Great video as always!

I saw Sammy play a few weeks ago at SXSW. His voice is starting to fade, it’s not gone, but not what it was. On guitar though, he was shredding. He played some great solos. He’s a great entertainer, and a great musician.

Is it possible that I finally found a person who not only plays but can convey how to play? Are you that dude

Great subject for a video. As an old dog, I remember watching this when it came out. I couldn’t help but imagine how nerve wracking it had to be in the first show swapping licks with the Maestro. I’d be willing to bet he stressed and over-prepared for this. I’m a big fan of your videos. You do an awesome service to the guitar community.
