I'm glad I wasn't required to imagine I was a WWII pilot in order to watch this video.

My Grandpa was the waist gunner on the B-29 called "The Duchess". The way they had to sit and turn their bodies to look through the periscopes to aim the guns took a toll on almost all waist gunners and they now have severe back problems.

My grandfather was an Irish man who fought for the Americans (he refused to fight for the English crown and Ireland was neutral). I was talking to him once about serving in the American army and something he said that I always found funny was "One thing the Germans never understood about the Americans was that if they had enough room to fit another .50 caliber machine gun in something, they were going to do it."

2:05 B29s are pretty vulnerable to hostile fighters actually. The fact that late war US Air Force was able to provide air protection by launching P51 in Okinawa thus diminishing the casualties of the flight crew may have contributed to the misconception that is B29 crews can “can perfectly protect themselves” with the machine guns.

During the latter part of WW 2 a couple of B 29s made emergency landings in Soviet territory The Soviets returned the air crews but hung onto the planes They later reverse engineered and build them as the Tupolev TU 4 NATO code Bull

Imagine how badass you would feel being a gunner on this machine

Also, you guys in the replies are thinking of the B-17. The B-29 Was *Marginally* Safer.

My grampy flew the B-29 “Pride of the Yankees” over Tokyo, 1 engine got hit very badly, the other had its propellor go wild and fly off, yet with only 2 engines left a zero attacked the bomber, lined up with the nose of the plane, ( he was a pilot ) and opened fire. A bullet hit his knee, then pulled back. Yet he still said with 2 engines out, he said “I’m taking this son of a b*tch all the way back!” And he did. He died in I think January 2014, I was 3 years old when he died. I miss him, but life is life, you can’t bring back dead people, even if they were a loved one. That is his story. Thanks for reading.
