Stalin: "write that down, write that down!"

Development of the B29 cost more than the Manhattan project.

Hard to believe that while this bird was flying in the Pacific, my Father was still piloting his B-17 over Germany while sucking oxygen from a tube and wearing a sheep-skin suit.

My grandfather was a flight engineer on these during Korea. They had troubles with the bomb bay hydraulics freezing up at the high altitude and low temperatures above Korea so he “acquired” a heating element from the mess hall and attached it to the bomb bay. 10mins out from target he’d turn them on to warm them up and they never had an issue. The other flight engineers caught wind of this and one morning the cooks burst into the base commander’s office saying that all the heating elements had been ripped out of their stoves and there wasn’t going to be hot food or coffee until they got replacements.

My dad was a crew chief on a B-29 on Saipan/ Tinian. He started on the B-17 then B-24 and finally the B-29. After the war he became line chief for the KC-97 tankers in the 509th. I think working on the B-29 was one of the things he was most proud of.

The development of the B29 was the single most expensive project the United States under during the entire war, even beating out The Manhattan Project that developed the nuclear bomb. The plane was simply a step beyond state of the art, it was a huge leap into the future.

Id like to fly this plane but the repair cost from war thunder prevents me from doing this

I've read the B-29 had over 2 million parts, each requiring a line drawing with values calculated by a slide rule.

I had a good friend who's Dad was a B-17 and later a B-29 pilot during and after WW2. He told me the difference between the two was unbelievable

The B29 program had some very long term benefits. It spawned a series of aircraft such as B29D, WB50 B50, KB50J and KC97 tanker. The KC97 evolved into several air cargo aircraft that flew into the 1990s. While not the first aircraft to have a pressurized cabin, it did make it practical on a large scale. Essentially the wartime production of large aircraft created the expertise for the development of the future airline industry.

My great grandfather was a mechanic on the B-29 the "Setting Pretty" in the 429th bomb group. He worked next to the "Enola Gay". I have great pictures of the B-29 aircraft and found a few great stories from the war.

I saw fifi in flight at an airshow in 2017 with some b25s in formation, incredible aircraft. I also saw her making a landing either last year or the year before.

The B-29 was better than what most countries have today for warplanes.

Gun control was far from computer. That came several decades later. Remote control is a far more accurate description.

These old Planes still had more leg room than a commerical boing 747.

The first combat modification was to remove those remote gun turrets. The B29B only had a tail turret.
