Muscle cars are an American thing, but the intoxicating mix of power, lunacy and thrills spreads everywhere. And so the Europeans also have some muscle cars to show. They may not look the part or be as cheap, but the spirit they share is the same that's found in their American brothers.

Hope you enjoy it funny and educational. Thank you so much for watching!

The Ford Focus RS isn't a muscle car by any stretch of the imagination.

I actually really like the design of the SLS

And the engine is naturally aspirated and not supercharged

1990's Lotus Omega (Lotus Carlton in the UK). 3.6L twin-turbo, 377hp, RWD, 570NM (420lbft), +280kmh (+175mph). And it was sold as a family saloon car. It would outrun almost everything on the Autobahn as most of the competence were limited at 250kmh. Only the Alpina B10 Bi-turbo was quicker.

I have watched this so many times. But I can't see a BMW, Benz or Ford Focus as muscle cars. In Europe all we get is the Mustang.

6:56 The SLS AMG didn’t have a supercharger, it was a naturally aspirated M159 6.2L V8. Just for your kind information.

6:56 Slight correction, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has a naturally aspirated 6.2 litre V8

The reasons why Europe doesn't produce muscle cars are simple: our roads are generally too narrow and not straight enough, we usually don't have enough room to park a big V8 car and fuel is very expensive compared to the USA. All of this means that any big, powerful car we produce is likely going to cost a lot more than a muscle car and will be aimed at a wealthier market segment than a comparable American vehicle. That's why even the Capri, which was pretty cheap, doesn't really qualify as a muscle car - it looks like one and is at a similar price point, but it lacks the muscle.

The only true muscle car currently sold in Europe is the Mustang, but for comparison, in the UK a Mustang will set you back £38, 000 - £45, 000 - that's $48-$56k - whereas in the US, you're looking closer to the $30, 000 - $35, 000 (or £24-£28, 000) point. For the V8 version in the UK, you also have to pay over £400 a year in tax to keep it on the road, then the fuel costs at around £1.10 - £1.20 per litre (at least outside of London where I live) (about $1.40 - $1.50 per litre, or $5.20 per gallon). Last time I was in the States, it was about $3 per gallon (and that was in California) or 50p per litre.

Those same reasons why we don't really do muscle cars are the same reasons why we love hot hatches: they're cheap to buy, small enough to fit on the road and the driveway, easily capable of going round our tight, twisty roads and inexpensive to run.
