No Tony, leaving the mechanical shutter out of the Z9 was not a mistake, especially with the newest firmware that added flicker reduction.

Comparing the Z7 to the d850 is not equivalent. I think the little secret is all of Nikon’s so called pro cameras like the D6, D850 and Z9 all have the round eyepiece. The square eyepiece is usually reserved for the non pro cameras. Not so sure what is special about the round eyepiece, but it’s the pattern I noticed. At least my opinion.

Finally upgraded from a Nikon D5200 to a D700 and absolutely love the quality upgrades from an entry level DSLR to a higher end enthusiast body. And I’m sure when I finally get around to trying the Nikon mirrorless I’ll be in love all over again.

Even though I won’t ever consider myself a pro or even to aspire to become anything more than an enthusiast who loves to take photos, I’m thankful to have found this avenue. Glad to know when I finally make the transition from the dslr to mirrorless I’ll have a couple of years worth of knowledge from people who care deeply about the craft.

I have this impression that Nikon is trying to make the 45mp the new 24. Maybe in future 45 will be the standard resolution and there will be a even bigger for the hi-res.

The Z8 hopefully will have the dedicated top left buttons of the Z9 as well as the BKT button of the D850. The need for menus is what is still Keeping me using my D850 and not upgrading. For me the usability just isnt the same.

I love the D850 and was hoping Nikon would keep it around. What a great camera.

Preordered the 4.5 400 from B&H the day it was announced. Got it about 2 weeks ago. Using it on Z7ii as a hobbyist…

Looking forward to the Z8 announcement. I believe it's going to bring something to the professional table that is above the Z9 level while still retaining the aura of the little Z9 as Z8.
Providing the one or the other choice. Both epic camera's that can fill a roll one better than the other as without this marketing becomes a problem. The Z8 has an important space to hold in the professional lineup. The Z8 has to be the same game changer as the D850 brought. When I switch to mirrorless, hopefully the Z8, my D850 is still coming to the party.

Nikkei Staff Writers (Sony Fanboys?) first published that "Nikon had stopped production of DSLRs". When that statement was proven false, they changed the story to "Nikon had stopped development of DSLRs". Two lies cannot make a truth!
Sony stopped all production of A-mount DSLRs/DSLTs in May 2021.

Most Nikon users left for Canon or Sony during last 2 years... Nikon should release a z6iii with z9AF quickly if they want to stop the bleeding...

Dear Tony, I sure hope you are correct about the Z8 being a mirrorless replacement for the D850. I've got a Z7, a Z9 and 6 primes and 4 zooms in the Z mount. With about two month's experience with the Z9, I still reach for the Z7 as a walk around landscape, pet and macro camera. I love its size but I miss the Z9's superior focus processing. I'd swap my Z7 for the improved processing of the Exspeed 7 in a heartbeat.

Nikon should in my opinion go out of the DSLR market with a D900. Whatever happens, there is enough used Nikon kit worldwide to keep us Nikonheads happy for a very long time. I personally could not be happier with my D4 and D700, both deliver the goods and then some, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

No, I see no reason to do further development of the DSLR platform.

I downgraded my D610 to my backup camera about a year ago and put a Z6 II in production (with a FTZ adapter and a 24-200 Z lens as a backup lens), and I have shot very few frames with the D610 since then.

The only time I reach for the D610 is when I need to do ultra wide shots. My Tamron 15-30 mm does not play nice with the Z6 II and the FTZ adapter, but otherwise the Z6 II is so much more convenient to use in my case (portraits and corporate buildings and interiors).

Nikon has a finite budget for research and development, so doing development on a platform with a severely limited lifespan would hamper the development of their mirrorless platform, something that could jeopardize the entire photo division.

I have never felt I needed to upgrade from my D750. I was hoping that a D860 would do so.
For mirrorless, I use a Fuji XT3 and between the two, it cover all my needs for now.
If a D860 like the one you described was available and was as big an improvement as the D850 was at the time, I would purchase it. Thanks for raising this subject Tony. Let’s hope someone at Nikon is listening. There is still money to be made in making really good, bulletproof practical cameras even if they don’t have the most megapixels or highest frames per second. (and yeah, why not a mechanical shutter in a camera this size.

Let's save some time: the D850 is the camera you want to have until you decide to change to go Mirrorless. When you change to Mirrorless, in some years from now having worn out your D850, the Z8/Z9 will be avaliable at a much lower price. Why rush out and buy now?

I had a F90X, F100, F3, F5, then went to the D100/200/300, D3, D600/610, D700, D750, D850, D780... then I borrowed a Z7ii from NPS. It's a game changer, I've since upgraded to the Z9. It allows you to concentrate on your composition and the camera does the rest of the work. It's beautiful.

I love my D850 - the best camera I have ever owned. As a mountain and landscape photographer it does everything I want of it. The only drawback is the weight of the camera fitted with a good lens that does justice to the capabilities of the camera. Sometimes I need to hand-hold the camera when I am tricky situations, and with the 46mpx sensor, sharpness does suffer. I have tried the Z7 and to be honest I hate the digital viewfinder - much prefer an optical one. I would be interested to see where Nikon would take any improvements to the D850, if they were to come. Frankly I would prefer to see more development in high quality lenses.

if nikon honestly thinks the z7 body is adequate for a d850 replacement, im switching to canon. just recently i tried the z7ii with the 70-200 2.8s as a potential replacement for my d850 and the camera felt horrible. like a d3100.

5:02, well, except for the iconic D500 which is discontiuned. Still Nikons best BIF camera.
