What are the BEST CHEAP COLORED PENCILS for adult coloring?
Today I’m reviewing the Brutfuner Oily Pencils to see if they live up to the hype as one of the new best oil-based budget pencils online!

I am always on the hunt for the best colored pencils, and I’ve been flooded with requests to try the Brutfuner colored pencils.

These are an affordable colored pencil with a fantastic reputation for being easy to blend and perfect for any skill level. I’m testing both the square set and the round set in this video review, and have purchased these myself (this is not sponsored).

Tell me in the comments: What set would you like to see me review next?

"180 is a lot of pencils, I don't think anyone really needs this many".... and here I ordered the 520 set hahaha

Sarah I agree with your review totally having used Brutfuner for a couple of months. But I found another bonus the square pencils were great for me as I have Parkinson’s and these pencils are so comfortable to hold so stable plus they don’t roll away. Thank you

As one who owns all of the premium artist grade colored pencils, there is one point I would like to add to the discussion on the merits of various brands. I believe that one important aspect of Polychromos colored pencils is that I have found their 120 color range to be better balanced and more complete a set of hues than any of the others. That said, I still think it is desirable to own and work with 2 or 3 sets as most quality sets have some special standout colors.

I tend to use the cheaper brands for back grounds or bigger area and use my high end pencils for details or portrait coloring

Sarah's collection of colored pencils is a dream!!! Really putting effort & information to the reviews. You saved me again from my impulsive buying tendency 😂

I did a ring of all my pencil swatches, and punched a hole in the colour part so I could lay it right over something for matching colours.

Great job. Side note: taking in a lot of evidence from manufacturers comments, reviews, and comparing ads for different pencils, it really appears that when dealing with Chinese-marketed pencils, "oily" does not mean oil v. wax. Instead, it means not a watercolor pencil.

Since a few month Brutfuner came out with a 520 pencilsset. I received them yesterday directy from China. I think they are great for colouringbooks and beginners, just like you said. They work oke, but they can and will never replace my top quality pencils. Thank you for your nice tutorials.

Another great video, Sarah! Your videos are always so professionally done from your review down to your filming and editing! That snap of the finger and all the swatches cut into strips was awesome! I love watching all the different reviews and comparisons of these pencils on YouTube.

I love the Brutfuner but I regret getting the square ones. My pencil sharpener eats them up. SO they are not economical in the long run. I bought them because I loved the presentation of color and there are some really nice ones. And, If you try to sharpen them with anything but an electric sharpener, it becomes work instead of fun. Also, the color names are in Chinese if you are o.k. with that, fine. That said, they have a nice lay down and I have many brands including Prismacolor, Holbein, Castle, Starjoy, Markart etc. Rather than recommending Brutfuner, I recommend Starjoy and even Markart over Brutfuner. However, if you must have Brutfuner, get the round ones. I would like for you, Sarah, to review Cool Bank. I don't want to overshadow your review with mine, so I will say nothing further about them until I see your review.

I bought my Brutfuner pencils a few months ago, I love them. I am not professional, but for me, these are very good. Creamy enough and a lot of colors (160 )😊 good to know the other brands you said are the same as these ones. Thank you for the video it helped s lot.

I've got the 180 set, these are my first coloured pencils that are not kids ones and I'm very happy with them, considering I bought them for less than 1 PLN for one pencil, haha. I do plan to get Polychromos tho, but the quality of Brutfuner I think is good enough to use them to save the expensive pencils for more important parts of drawing.

Hi there! I posted this on another channel as well, but wanted to add it here, since your review also helped me make up my mind. 😊 I chose the square Brutfuners:
“I know it’s an older video, but just wanted to say, I really love these pencils! I’m a beginner with colored pencils. Between your reviews and several others, I decided to try them. They were $30 on Amazon with a 25% coupon, and came quickly. I love the easy lay down of pigment. They are perfect for learning blending, and other practice and adult coloring. I tend to fidget with my pens and pencils, and the square shape had actually become my favorite fidget toy. 😆 They do actually work in my T’gaal hand sharpener, with some adjustments. It will seriously leave bite marks and chipped paint, and you may have to fiddle with it to get the pencils to turn initially. But it is doable if you are careful. I will eventually get an electric sharpener, but this is practice for me right now. The bite marks simply make the set ‘not precious’ so I can play with them without twitching. Thank you for the fun recommendation! I’m thoroughly enjoying these!”

Thank you on the thorough review as well as including a sharpening test and finding out if these really were oil based pencils. So many reviews were lacking much detail or actually having used the pencils.

I bought mine ages ago - before the hype started (in fact it was probably me that started the hype as I was so impressed with them and went on about it at every opportunity!). Mine have round barrels but are all one colour, unlike the Castle Arts. They also lay down very differently from my Castle Arts. I think my set is 160 (possibly 180 - can't remember as I've put them in a big case). They are really lovely and smooth, and layer beautifully. I have discovered that you need to use lots of light layers. I suspect mine are more like the square ones which may actually be the same and just square as a gimmick... Who knows. But I love them.

I think Brutfuner is a "chinification" of the word "buntstifte", which can be found on many of the Faber-Castell boxes, and which literally means "colored pencils" in German.
