The psychology of Ted Lasso (season one)

Ted Lasso’s unfettered optimism is a big part of what’s made the show the most popular thing on television. Just look at all those Emmys! Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein and co. have created a television juggernaut with the affable coach at its center, but how does the psychology of its main character actually work?

When I was much younger and coached high school football people used to call me an eternal optimist. I was ted lasso on the outside, Larry David on the inside. Even after relegation lassos first thought was "we can just win the Champions league". That was me after every loss. Love this show. Ted lasso exists, theyre out there, ive met them.

To me, it wasn't about wanting to have a Ted in my life but wanting to BE Ted. I've learned a lot of the skills he shows like understanding, restraint, thoughtfullness, and kindness, but a lot of those qualities aren't perceived as very manly and so there aren't many role models in media that are BOTH successful and respected.

Usually a man with those traits will be ridiculed, like Higgins, whom was bullied before Ted arrived and made it OK to be that way. Or he won't be the main character, which is how Nate feels.

Nate hates that he has those positive traits because he doesn't believe that it is ok/possible to be successful or respected by acting this way since his dad is cold and distant, which is why he looks up so much to Roy. His mother, though, always takes care of him and loves him no matter what, which is what he truly looks up to, but that's not a male model so he ends up feeling entitled to praise while hating those who don't like him, thinking they're just stupid or dickish for not understanding how good he is.

I was like Nate for most of my adult life, I hated that part of me because it didn't feel like that was what I was supposed to do, that I was supposed to constantly be impressing others and clawing for status despite that not being what I'm good at or that I wasn't making a positive impact in the world. And see the difference? Nate makes everyone uncomfortable because he's uncomfrotable about the qualities people like Keeley and Rebecca(eventually) see in him.
But Ted uplifts and helps everyone who's willing to listen to him, despite it taking a toll on him.

To me, Ted is far more heroic than a fictional superhero because he feels like he's saving the world he was dropped in, in SUCH and organic way that it feels beautiful to see, I want to be more like Ted because Ted feels like he is a real human and also he is what the world needs most right now.

I think his suggestion/complaint box was a huge step in winning over his team. Water pressure was a small thing to change, but it was something that really bothered the players daily.
