It’s hard to accept the fact that our happy chemicals can’t surge all the time. DOPAMINE only spurts when you approach a new reward. OXYTOCIN only spurts when you enjoy safety in numbers. SEROTONIN only spurts when you assert your social importance. You will not have peace if you rush to trigger more of these chemicals as soon as a spurt is over. You’ll have more peace in the long run if you get comfortable with the neutral feeling between these spurts.

Thank you so much! I experience a lot of anxiety or stress, and have been smoking on and off for years now... I have finally thought to myself there must be a reason for why I can't seem to stop this, and others can.... I think I finally understand this better, and it feels helpful to see it in the light you are shining on this subject. Trying to mask high cortisol levels by elevating the happy chemicals, even though - you said it right - they are harming me in the long Be it smoking, be it sugary foods, be it anything else that makes me feel "good".... Needing a drink when going to a party or social event etc. Really refreshing to look at it from a biochemical standpoint. Thanks!

So perhaps when children come home from school and play rather than study it's because they are trying to distract and counter balance their cortisol levels which have been elevated from a stressful school environment. That would mean it's not laziness, but rather a safety mechanism to maintain mental stability.

This is fantastic I am glad I was able to come across this, like many comments before me, it helps to explain what has been happening.


I do have a question though. When you state "Our mammal brain is triggered when we see a threat to our social support" do you have a real life example?


Youbhave half a chocolate bar at school to give your friend but someone else has a full chocalate bar to give your friend so you feel the threat of not being able to have that friend much longer because he goes to the full chocolate bar guy?


Is it a threat too your social standing as is?


Any clarification with an example would be unreal, from anyone if they can think of it.
