Early Season Sowing 2 Ways! | Winter Sowing in Zone 6

Hello! Today we are doing some soil blocking and winter sowing in plastic jugs to show you two ways to get sowing early!

Early spring planting means transplanting 3-4 week old seedlings into the garden, under cover, 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost. Look for varieties that will finish within 8 weeks of transplant, or be well enough established to handle heat like cabbages.

Here's a list of veggies and flowers that like to grow in the early spring, or need to be started early in zones 5-7a
Start Early February: Onions, Leeks, Hot Peppers, cabbage, broccoli
Mid February: Perennial herbs (oregano, thyme, lavender, rosemary) Gooseberry, Celery (succession plant all growing season)
Mid to Late (repeat in 2 weeks):
These will be the 1st wave to go out under cover, giving an extra 4 week shoulder to season. Wait for soil to warm to 50F to transplant and 45F to direct seed.
kale, kohlrabi, bok choy, raab, radicchio, lettuce (leaf), spinach, arugula

Realized my seed saved Black King Pansies and Wild Violas had germinated in my fridge yesterday so I now have my first flowers going. I'm still trying to get the timing right here in MI for the early stuff, I left it too late last year. I see that gardening dopamine smile you have!

I’ve never seen this method before and I think it’s great! Especially since here where I live in Canada we just got snow…again…April 21…🤦🏻‍♀️ this would help extend my growing season. Thanks for the tip! 💙

Great video! You are fantastic and a huge help to me. I'm watching all your videos and trying to follow along as we are kinda in the same area. Im cape cod zone 7a. Started my onions the same day 2/3 and today I have 8 little sprouts so far but who is counting...and hovering... and obsessing...well that would be me. But its so much fun. Do you think its too early for me to start my broccoli? Also I have seeds to start Calendula, Cosmos, Nasturtium, Zinnia and sunflowers is it too early for those? Thanks for all your inspiration :)

Can you tell us and show us more about your sale? Is it just seeds or plants too? How you get ready, etc. I would be very interested in that. I'm hoping I'll be able to find a sale like that near me, and/or maybe put together a sale myself someday. I'm zone 8b in the foothills of the Sierras in California. You've been a good teacher for me.

Hello from Maine. I’m starting shallots from seed this year. Should they winter sow directly in my garden box or in milk jugs? Is now too early to start?

Hiii! Great to see youuu!💗💗💗. Do you have any tips on Forget-me-nots? I have put seeds out in my garden for years and nothing. Should I start some now? I am in central NY. My neighbor has them just show up every year, she has never planted them. I have meant to ask you for two years.😔. I researched last year and still, after doing what was said, (I forget what was said now)still no Forget-me-nots.😢. Any thoughts will help. Thank you in advance 🥰💓😘.
