We have enough experts out there, we just need more kindness

son, I've been practicing martial arts since 1989, and there always has been and there always will be people like that, sad but true

The only way to teach a full-of-himself jj black belt is be better in real fighting than this guy and do a bjj match with open hand strikes, just like in pancrase, and you beat the living taste of him, i used to do that in my 30’s … a lots of egos must be checked in this sport

Tbh you're pretty high level too and when I first met you in a seminar I was taken back by how laid back and humble you are. It was almost shocking. I wish more high level guys were as approachable and helpful as you. The sport would become much better

My BJj school has incorporated occasional striking classes (some of the professors fought professionally).

I’ve seen some of the black belts get mauled when they were forced to stand up and throw punches and couldn’t grapple. These same guys could twist me into a pretzel if we grappled.
I’ve also seen a few white belts and blue belts who were amazingly fast strikers and could slip most punches.

Striking is a totally different animal from grappling. Being good in one doesn’t automatically mean one is good in another. Most of the people at my BjJ school are aware of this since many of us are over the age of 35 and are hobbyists.

It’s just like everything else in life. A skill in one area doesn’t imply skill in another area.
It’s a shame that some people both in and outside martial arts don’t understand this.

Thank you for this. I was starting to go into sparring rounds with the mindset of “im better than them” to not get belt ranks stuck in my mind to affect my movements. But it was slowly creeping out to people outside of sparring. Thank you.

Entering my first tournament I thought itd be a breeze and I'll demolish folks, lost all matches via guillotine. Made me realize it doesn't matter, just live to see another day and be humble/kind.
Had to get it back in blood tho and copped a silver next time, but whatever, just proves I trained and practiced techniques. We all die someday, no need to be mean to others, esp cuz we all sucked at one poibt

You’ll find this in every hobby and profession, you’ll often see these type of people staying in their box and not trying new things. Total ego trip

Good vid. Even just within the sport itself, being a good athlete doesn’t even necessarily mean you’re a good coach, a good competitor, a good gym owner, etc. All are different skills.

This is a really important message. Thanks for sharing.

good to hear someone talking about humility and checking your ego, to me a big part of martial arts/bjj is becoming a better person

Thank you for this insight! I love this realistic perspective on jiu jitsu as just a thing some people love to do, even though I love this sport so much.

This is so funny, I just so happen to be working with the most arrogant purple belt ever. He keeps reminding me I’m a blue belt and talks to me like I work under him or he’s my boss.

Not BJJ but I did have a wrestling teammate who I swear thought he was Jordan Burroughs. He would watch so much film on wrestling he would often ignore tips our coaches and other teammates gave. I would be lying if I didn’t say it was satisfying to see him fail to qualify for state 😂

Dude like that at my new gym. Like bro yea you’re damn good at grappling. Can you fight standing? I know I can without a doubt. Sometimes I want to “humble” him myself but do my best to ignore it.

But... But... But... I just got my first stripe on my white belt TODAY! Surely that means I'm better in every way than any zero-stripe white belt in the entire universe?!? COS I'VE GOT A STRIPE!!! (No... Really... I got my stripe today.

What’s even worse, or at least more pathetic, are the people that have an elitist attitude just because they train at a certain gym or a big name coach smh, and a lot of times they’re not even good themselves lol.

I agree with everything you said, great video!

I’d probably be cocky if I was actually good at jiu jitsu. Lol
