"They want you dead...or in their lie". Penn is perfect in this movie. Every movement of his Penn's face, every wrinkle of the brow, twist of the mouth - pure genius. Penn is a walking, talking piece of beautiful. poetic art.

I don’t know what life in the military is like, but as a retired NYPD Sgt I love this scene this is what standing at roll call when the new Capt arrives was like.

You can tell the author was in the military for quite a while. This is the attitude of every combat veteran I have known.

Thin Red Line is an excellent example of how to do film voice over well. It's the characters' internal monologues. Interpretative and jumbled and poetic.

Bad voice overs just state things they are already showing or have shown. Or simplistic things like "This guy is a real jerk and I'm sick and tired of it."

Thin Red Line's voice overs summon up the feelings and perspectives of the characters without stating what they are outright.

About year 15 of a 21 year career i adopted this very mindset. "So much to spew out." You can tell when a "leader" doesnt truly believe what theyre spewing to you

Clooney's character looks one of those people that looks important, collects a big check, but really doesn't do anything.

"Any of you men want to see me about anything, anything at all, you will find that I am available". Reminds me of all those horrible teachers I had who would tell me to come to them for anything. But once you go to them cause you're getting bullied in school they tell you it's not their problem

Everything's a lie. Everything you hear, everything you see. So much to spew out. They just keep coming, one after another. You're in a box. A moving box. They want you dead, or in their lie... There's only one thing a man can do - find something that's his, and make an island for himself. If I never meet you in this life, let me feel the lack; a glance from your eyes, and my life will be yours.

in a real blockbuster, this would be a pivotal moment with George Clooney giving a rousing speech. but this is the thin red line we're talking about here

I felt like Welsh when I was in the army. Every. Single. Moment.

Captain Harry Truman, when he met a troup of screwups he inherited, didn't give a speech, in fact didn't say a single word. He just walked up and down the line, looking at each man. Then he had them dismissed. They followed him into combat and through their entire lives. Turns out that Truman, a voracious reader of history, got the idea from General Grant who'd done the same thing with an army he took on to command.

A truly brilliant film . Should been showered with Oscars instead of Spielbergs' Cowboy Ryan story...

“The greater good” “sacrifice” those are the lies he is talking about. The world is much bigger than those lies. People put themselves in boxes when they try to make sense of it all, our structures, our schools. “Get a job” “make money” is that really all I’m good for? When one focuses on just those things and blocks out everything else, they’re in a box.
