The Thin Red Line 1998
In 1942, Private Witt (Jim Caviezel) is a U.S. Army absconder living peacefully with the locals of a small South Pacific island. Discovered by his commanding officer, Sgt. Welsh (Sean Penn), Witt is forced to resume his active duty training for the Battle of Guadalcanal. As Witt and his unit land on the island, and the American troops mount an assault on entrenched Japanese positions, the story explores their various fates and attitudes towards life-or-death situations.

watched Thin Red Line probably 50 times. And I always find something to look into. whether it's myself, my soul, my beliefs, the sadness, the bravery and the strength combined with
heart of somebody like Witt. breaks my heart as he is recalling his own mother dying and her thoughts and fears...and there he stands awaiting his last breath. In order to protect
those other men on the river. Outstanding. Love Jim C. Great find by Terrance Malick. A true artist.

As it was with the actual invasion of Guadalcanal, the beach landings were unopposed and went smoothly.

With Saving private Ryan, i think that The thin Red line is the greatest WW2 movie...

Such a beautifully well crafted scene! The pan around to cut back to see all the landing boats with the battleship in the background is amazing!

I had the misfortune of growing up in a household that came to be headed up by a guy who was on Guadalcanal. Believe me, living with these people on a day-to-day was not an easy thing. They drank heavily, swore alot, and punched you for no reason...and I mean punched you hard, not slap. Sure, we all hear now about the "greatest generation", and their sacrifice(s) are something to be honored. But when your actual memory of living with them is a six foot two inch, 230 pound drunk man standing over you after laying you out on the kitchen floor, well - put it this was, I knew all about PTSD before term was even coined. These guys did and saw horrible things that haunted them the rest of their lives. We have to think long and hard before we send you people off to war...it truly is all hell to paraphrase W Tecumseh Sherman...and the devastating toll it takes on people two and even three generations down the pike is enormous. If you truly "support the troops" then make sure the next war we start is a just cause.

I'm in this scene (and others) somewhere. Me and some Irish boys were travelling in Queensland at the time and heard the ad asking for extras over the radio. We 'worked' on the movie for about nine weeks and had an amazing time. Most of the actors were great to be around, though Sean Penn reportedly got knocked out in a Port Douglas bar by a waiter he insulted. Good times and a fantastic movie.

I made a boat ride from Guadalcanal to Tulagi and back one day in August of 2012 with a survivor of the Battle of Savo Island.

That late afternoon light in the tropics, you can see the moist in the air and feel the heath of the sun especially if you would be wearing a metal helmet and a full outfit.

I think once they realised their amphibious assault had been carried out with success they would have known at that point that the Japanese were lying patiently in wait. Going into the unknown was just as scary as landing opposed.

I like the "ya gotta breathe" sgt. Poor guy loses his entire fire team. Shakes him up so badly they take his weapon and send him to the rear. Can't imagine losing 12 men yoyve spent a year or more training and living with in a matter of minutes in the most horrific ways imaginable.

This sequence is like a polar opposite of the normandy scene from "Saving Private Ryan".

Actor Don Adams served in the Marine Corps and was in Guadalcanal. He was shot and due to complications from contracting Malaria was transferred to Hospital in Wellington N.Z. where he spent a year recovering.

Ok did anyone ever play Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault? I'm talking about the flawed, yet really ambitious PC game not the console ones from the PS2/GameCube era. That game was really remarkable I thought back when I first played it. My old beat up computer could barely handle it, but I managed to get through the entire game even after a save erase crash bug.

You start at Pearl Harbour then go to Guadalcanal and eventually make it to Tarawa. It was epic and the bonsai charge parts were intense. The Tarawa battle was also intense and really difficult because you had Japanese shooting at you from every direction.
