Have you heard of Section 28 before?

Yh, I thought about Section 28 when the DSG bill was passed.

It makes me sick whenever someone claims that "We got gay rights now stop complaining" or "The LGBT community keeps claiming they're oppressed", as if being a non-cishet isn't illegal in 70+ countries and the chances of reverting to homophobic/transphobic laws isn't possible. I wonder how those people feel at the moment now that the DSG bill and the Texas situation is happening.

In Utah, when I was in school, teachers were not allowed to talk about gay people in a positive light. If anything could be construed as support it was disallowed. I'm unsure whether or not it was properly fixed.

What seems especially nefarious is to give it such a misleading name. Sure, all letters of LGBTQ will be affected, but it seems that it’s targeting the trans community in particular

The thing I haven't seen on this is how will this affect the children of gay parents? Will an eight year old get in trouble for saying they have two moms or dads? Imagine how it'll affect children to not be able to talk about their families in school. Or how confused they'll be for being told they can't talk about their parents literally existing because "it's inappropriate".

Not to mention that making this topic taboo in the UK put a stigma on LGBT+ issues for an entire generation, and many of the people of that generation are lawmakers now. I strongly suspect that's part of the reason why Trans issues are such an uphill battle in the UK.

So, something I noticed about the bill has also been noticed by Florida teachers who are now complying in the strictest sense with the law.

Because, when you read it, you realize it's not a 'don't say gay' bill, but a 'don't recognize gender at all' bill. So now teachers are sending memos home with their students explaining that due to the new law, they cannot use gendered pronouns, explaining that they will be using "they/them" pronouns exclusively moving forward, and they will no longer be discussing their spouses or allowing discussions of parental relationships in class.

It's malicious compliance at its finest.

As a someone in Florida, this is absolutely ridiculous. If it was for religious reasons i would sorta understand, but that fact they're doing it because "kids shouldn't learn about lgbtq+" is just stupid.
What? Should we also stop gay people from being around kids completely now?

I know this isn't related, but your outfit matches so well with your hair and it's very aesthetically pleasing :)

I remember how in the dark I was when I was a kid, I didn’t have any clue what the LGBTQ+ community was until the end of my 7th grade year and that was just because I heard it mentioned in the hallway was curious then looked it up not because it was openly discussed.

If you wanna tuck and wear a dress that’s up to you.
If you wanna wear trousers and grow a beard, that’s also up to you.
But I draw a line at “teaching” and encouraging kids who mostly still believe in Santa at that age, that this is an acceptable and normal way of life.

You hear that? It's the slippery slope before 2015 argument being proven right.

As a Floridian, this has me quite worried for the kids. You cannot erase LGBTQ+.

I don’t want to go back to people acting like lgbtq+ topics and people are inappropriate for children.

I generally agree with the people who don’t think it’s right. Children are young and small and their mindset can be molded. If you tell them about gays and stuff they will think they are when they are not. Let them grow to what they are and whatever they wanna be or already were is ok!

What can I, someone who is not of voting age nor who lives in Florida, do about this?

Do you usually get info about LGBTQ related stuff in school in the US? I'm 30+ and went to school in Sweden, things may be different now, but I don't remember hearing anything about queer people in school before we were like 15. If we wanted to know anything, we had to go online or to magazines. Sweden is always promoted as such a "progressive" country when it comes to this, so I'm curious if the US has been better at teaching about LGBTQ related things at school in recent years before this happened?
