The Daily’s final round table before Election Day features three of The New York Times’s top campaign reporters -- Astead Herndon, Shane Goldmacher and Lisa Lerer -- discussing the big events of the past several days, including Donald Trump’s giant rally at Madison Square Garden in New York, Kamala Harris’s closing argument to voters, and fears about election interference fueled by ballot arson in three different states.

Anyone could have predicted the ballot box arsons and many of us did.
Drop boxes need to be inside municipal buildings, fire houses, police stations etc.

Herndon is spot on! Democracy arguments on protecting status quo is ineffective.

Conversation aside, I'm a long time listener to The Daily podcast, but I've never seen a photo of Michael Barbaro. Seeing this unfamiliar person talking with a voice that is so incredibly familiar is such a weird experience. Its like watching someone lip synch to a conversation.

Why not talk about a 40% rise in housing over 5 years? The doubling of food, of rent, gas, clothes, shelter since Bidens been President. You want to talk about what a comic says at a rally? That's why yoy LOST

I’m sure your paper will find a way to normalize this.

Since nobody else will, I'm going to advocate for Tony Hinchcliffe. I've seen a lot of his shows, and he makes fun of EVERYBODY for EVERYTHING. Much like Don Tickles did. He's not being hateful of a culture because he's such a safe distance from them, he's making fun of the people IN THE ROOM and to their face. And to be honest, the last time I saw Puerto Rico it was just after a hurricane, but it looked a bit like a landfill.

Yeah, Trump is a strategic genius, is that what you're trying to tell us??

Our education system is so F-ed. Watch any interview of a Maga supporter at a rally and tell me better education wouldn't have avoided a hate fueled movement like this one. Sure we might have a different movement fueled by anger/frustration, but at least they would be making sound arguments, and supporting someone who is actually going to help them.

Good chat - you're hitting the nail on the head, especially when you talk about how many of the people don't think Trump is talking about him, when he slams a group, even if its your group. Its a foolish belief, but central to how Trump gets votes. There's this thinking that, I'm not Trans, I'm not an illegal immigrant, I'm not a person of colour, so he's not talking about me. But we are all human beings and when we bail on our fellow humans, we demean our own humanity - which is what Trump wants - for everyone to demean humanity.

Shows how fucked the US is when, with only 6 days to go, and it's still near enough 50/50. This situation is NOT going away - if Trump loses, his political acolytes/analysts will be learning much from this run, for next time...

This is a wonderful conversation. What struck me immediately is when they were talking about how the issue of how “democracy“ doesn’t land, the reason being is because in my opinion as an educator, is that there’s not enough of generational memory in the general United States population and also because of the lack of civics and history education, practicing of critical, thinking, and interpretation, and the knowledge taught of what has gone on in the past and why it’s so critical at this moment for democracy to hold firm for the future for the global world. Remember past is prologue. I live in Europe and that is never far from our lives of what has happened in generations past and why it’s so important to prevent what happened in the past to come forward as action in the future. I’m so sorry for all of this, and I pray that democracy wins this election. 💙💙💙

It hurts my brain that people trust Trump more on the economy.

I still feel, and have for a while, that there's an inherent racism (probably from ignorance and not malice) in grouping all hispanics, or others into groups. There is no "latino/a vote". They're people, same as any other race. Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Guatemalan, Peruvian, and so on. A hugely diverse continent exists beneath North America and it's incredibly frustrating to continue to hear discussions of the "latino vote" or the "hispanic vote", because it ignores the realities of who people are their countries and cultures are, breaking them down to what's believed to be the lowest common denominator.

Please stop this.

One thing about the bro / Joe Rogan voter is they’re hyper-competitive. Don’t underestimate the power of a reflexively wounded ego craving a win, particularly after what happened in 2020. For some of them it’s key to their identity, make no mistake. It’s how they approach their video games, their sports betting, their entire worldview. Chip on their shoulder disgruntled competitiveness. I do think educated women are gearing up to school Trump this time, but the idea these guys will feel *any* less motivated is wrong I think.

20, 000 people in a city of 8 million and metro area of 19 million. New York Times need to hire people who understand math.

“Trump is racist about PR and how this is bad for Kamala Harris” NYT gets dragged for sane washing for Trump but this is insane they spend more time saying why hasn’t Kamala said that ‘democracy is broken and this is how I’ll fix it “ instead of how insanely terminal the MSG rally would be in a rational word. Pathetic.

Trump campaign says something clearly abhorrent.
NYT podcast: let’s try and analyze it and make sense of it and make it more palatable for everyone and to make it balanced let’s bring the other candidate on equal footing
