Well made video, but I have to add that those ethnic percentages are that of “Nagorno-Karabakh” not the entire occupied region. The flatlands around NK (which are also under Azerbaijani rule after the peace deal) were majority Azerbaijani.

Also this video doesn’t go over the deportations and massacres of Azerbaijani minority committed by Armenians when they occupied it in the first Karabakh war. The thing is there wasn’t simply a natural ethnic line that separated Armenians from Azeris, especially in a mountainous region like NK so we can’t really speak of a majority in the region as in normal sense.

Footnotes! (AKA: What I got wrong)
-Sarkissian was technically not in charge with the war, it was more Pashinyan
-At 2:24, Georgia was not part of the USSR until later
-Stalin did or didn’t “GIVE” Karabakh to Azerbaijan, he did however make it an autonomous oblast in 1923, this is really how you define “giving”, as it’s a fairly hot topic
-I am American, I did my best to represent both sides and try not to be too biased against one or another. If you are from Azerbaijan or Armenia, Let me know what I left out! I’m here to learn too! :)

I think its important to note that after the 2nd ceasefire, the land occupied by Armenia that wasnt Nagorno-Karabagh but the surrounding territory was majority Azeri. Much of the Azeri tactics of ethnic cleansing was also used on Azeris in this region.

Stalin DIDN'T gave Karabakh to Azerbaijan.

After Soviet rule established in Caucasus, Armenians were demanding to include Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Armenia. On 4th July 1921 Caucasian Bureau of the Communist Party satisfied its demands and agreed to transfer the region to Armenia. Head of Azerbaijani SSR Narimanov, protested against this decision and demanded Stalin to be involved. Stalin involved and decided that region should not be transferred to Armenia. There was the next meeting on 5th July, where it was decided no to transfer the region to Armenia but as a compromise to give Armenians living there and an authonomy within Azerbaijan.

Now the context is very important. Armenians like to take this out of context and pretend that Nagorno-Karabakh at the time was part of Armenia, Stalin came and gave it to Azerbaijan. However this is not true. The exact wording of the decision in Russian "...оставить Нагорный Карабах в составе Азербайджанской ССР" which literally translates to English as "Nagorno-Karabakh has to be remained as part of Azerbaijani SSR". You can check the wording by yourself.

Every sane person will agree that this wording ("to be remained") directly assumes that Nagorno-Karabakh at the time was part of Azerbaijan. So no, Stalin didn't gave Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan, he only refused to transfer it to Armenia, and that is huge difference.

1 crucial fact missing: there are hunders of thousands of Azeri refugees that were ethnically cleansed during 1st war (especially from the 7 regions surrounded Nagorno Karabakh). So basically after first war there were 750k Azeri refugees. It's too shameful to forget this fact.

What about Kafan events in 1987? When Armenians killed hundreds of Azerbaijanis and displaced hundreds of thousands Azerbaijanis?

Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh/Qarabag, was a province of Armenia from established 189 BC to 387 AD. It has always been filled with native Armenians. The first turkic presence in the land was during the occupying Qara Qoyunlu state. Even then, Armenians made up a majority of the demographics. As tatars (modern named: azerbaijanis) started to move in, the demographics shifted a little. About 80% of the land was Armenian populated (native), while abput 20% was tatar (foreign). During the late 1800s, many azeris started to kill Armenians and ran them out of their cities. During this time period, azeris were a majority only due to their aggression towards the native Armenians. As the 1890s started to come around, many Armenians started to move back and relocate back to their historical villages and cities. In 1920, Azeris started to kill Armenians from Shushi in large numbers. This massacre was known as the Shushi Pogrom/ Shushi Massacre. Many Armenians from other cities were also deported and killed, but the most killings of Armenians took place in Shushi. Yet again, Armenians had to flee, making Azeris the majority. Also, in 1920 Stalin had ceded three Armenian provinces to their neighbors. Nakhichevan and Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh to Azeris, and Javakhk to Georgia. From 1920 to 1994, Artsakh was being occupied by Azerbaijan. 1988 marks the Sumqayit and Baku pogroms of Armenians. The Armenian population of Azerbaijan is in unrest, as well as the Armenians of Artsakh calling onto the Republic of Armenia to liberate them from oppressive Azerbaijani rule. Fed. 20, 1988 marks the official date of the Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh war. As a result, Armenians were the victors and Artsakh became an independent republic on May 12, 1994. Fast forward 28 years, and Azeri forces bombard Stepanakert (Artsakh's capital) at 4 am, on September 27, 2020. This causes the 2nd Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh war. During the first 3 weeks, the Defacto Independent Reoublic of Artsakh's forces are able to hold off major Azeri advantages. As a result, Azeris start gaining massive military support from Turkey and Israel, as well as minor support from Syrian jihadists, Ukranians, and Pakistanis. Now, if you did read all of this, thank you. I want you to think to yourself to "who owned this land first?" If you answered, Azerbaijan, then you're incorrect. Artsakh is Armenian.
