Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: Azerbaijan takes control of disputed region – BBC News

Azerbaijan claims to have taken control of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, after a two-day military operation.

A delegation representing ethnic Armenians have met for peace talks in nearby Yevlakh, to negotiate the enclave’s integration into Azerbaijan, as part of a ceasefire agreement.

But, there are fears among Armenians that Azerbaijan taking control could lead to ethnic cleansing, and it has been reported that hundreds of ethnic Armenians were injured during the military operation.

Some 120,000 ethnic Armenians live in the South Caucasus enclave, recognised internationally as part of Azerbaijan.

Armenia along with the international community accepts the region belongs to Azerbaijan but after failed negotiations for many years the territory was taken back hence the only dispute was with break away separatists who were finally overwhelmed. Humanitarian aid sent from Azerbaijan to the area were blocked by the separatists. The people of Azerbaijan are finally going back to their homes after it was stolen from them.

Azerbaijan is not engaging in an invasion; rather, it is taking necessary action against terrorist Armenian factions. We assert our right to restore our sovereignty, a fundamental principle upheld in Western political thought that bars any external intervention.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that Armenia entered into an agreement with Azerbaijan in 2020, which they are obligated to honor. The UN itself has passed four resolutions branding Armenia as the aggressor and calling for the complete withdrawal of its forces from Karabakh.
