📣What is the barraquito?
The barraquito is much more than a coffee, it is an emblem of social and gastronomic life in Tenerife. Originally from the Canary Islands, this coffee is characterized by its layer of condensed milk, a careful blend of espresso, frothy milk, a touch of liqueur (usually Licor 43), and is topped with a layer of milk foam and a pinch of cinnamon and lemon. At first sight, its presentation is an art, showing the different layers of ingredients that compose it.

The History of the Barraquito
The barraquito, also known in some areas as “zaperoco”, has a history dating back to the middle of the 20th century in Tenerife. It is said that its name comes from a regular customer of a local bar called Barraco, who always ordered his coffee in this special way. Over time, this style of preparing coffee became popular and spread throughout the island.
We do not know if the story is true, but what is true is that the barraquito is known throughout the island, and its inhabitants enjoy it daily.

Recipe of Barraquito or Zaperoco

Ingredients
Condensed milk
Liqueur 43 or similar
Espresso coffee
Frothy milk
Cinnamon
Lemon peel

How to make a barraquito or zaperoco
In a tall cup, add a tablespoon of condensed milk to the bottom.
Next, add a measure of Licor 43 to the coffee. The amount can vary according to your preference.
Add the freshly brewed espresso.
In a separate container, heat a little whole milk and whisk it to obtain froth.
Pour the frothed milk carefully over the coffee and liqueur.
