Very well explained and informative. What a relief when you stated that Ford fixed the coolant cylinder problem in 2020. I just purchased a Bronco Sport Badlands and felt my heart stutter a little... lol

So I have the Mazda design engine on my 2014 fusion 2.0 ecoboost. I have had it for 10 years with no issues with 120K miles. Good to know. Glad I don't have the newer one, this car has been very reliable for me.

Really concise and informative. Great video for prospective buyers of vehicles with this engine. Also nice audio quality. Thank you!

Periodic maintenance, 38k+ miles, zero issues, not assembled on a Friday. Satisfied owner for six years.

Here are some things to help w/the reduction of carbon build up, though it won't alleviate it.
1. When driving, allow the engine to get up to full operating temperature. The worst thing you can do is to do shorties around town and such, which don't allow for the engine to get up to full operating temperature. This allows for more carbon to build up in the cylinders. Take her out on the highway at least once a month and open her up, especially before an oil change.
2. Use a good quality of gasoline w/built in fuel cleaners. What are called Tier 3 Fuels. With the cheaper fuels, you get what you pay for. I recommend Chevron w/its Techron fuel additive. During the hot summer months, especially on long trips and w/the vehicle loaded, use a Premium fuel.
3. At least once a month, run a fuel cleaner, like Chevron Techron, in the fuel tank.
4. I recommended using Full Synthetic oil (Motorcraft, Mobil One, Pennzoil, Amsoil), w/a good quality oil filter, (Motorcraft, NAPA Gold, Wix, etc.). Stay away from Frams.
5. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule.

There is some incorrect information in the comments. The oil pump in the 2.0l Ecoboost is not belt driven.

There are two types of 2.0 EB engine out there. First one with closed deck design (for an example in Focus ST) is solid and reliable. And the another version with open deck. And that one is the one with coolant leaking/overheating problems.

Thanks for the video. I'm thinking about a 2022/2023 Maverick with the 2.0L Sounds like it *should* be safe.

Bought a 2016 Ford fusion with the gen 1 2.0 ecoboost engine over a year ago, have 65k miles on her and shes still going. After reading about the coolant intrusion on the gen 2, Im glad i got one with the gen 1.

Thanks for the video. The real problem with Ford EcoBoost (or EcoBoom) engines is the terribly thin cylinder walls. I personally think that is the biggest design flaw. With the Water Pump being the second biggest design flaw in the engines. You must remove the timing belt or chain to replace the water pump. duh.

Outstanding video. Thank you for the information. I just bought a 2020 Edge and I hope to have no issues with it but it's great to know what to look for.

Exhaust manifold crack? JB Weld. Solenoid failure? JB Weld. Oil blow by? JB Weld. Coolant intrusion? JB Weld.

I specifically wanted this engine and not that 1.5 crap in which have issues. My 2.0T 2017 Fusion gave me no problems. I throw Lucas injector cleaner once a month. Currently at 81k miles and still running well. I want a F150 now but will hold on to my Fusion until those prices come down.

I have a 2014 Fusion titanium and right at about 126, 000 miles. recently started having a bad oil leak (not sure from where) and secondly, I feel like coolant is being heavily consumed too as the reservoir is low after adding a little into it

I'm looking at the Ford Bronco Sport and trying to decide between the 2 engine options. If the focus is mostly on reliability, which engine would you bet on? the 4 cyl 2.0l EcoBoost or the 3 cyl 1.5l EcoBoost?

Another question for you guys, how often do you see VVT/timing/timing chain issues with these?

My 2016 escape developed a small oil leak at about 30k miles.
Not enough to have to add oil between oil changes but still frustrating.

Owned 2 - 2.0L GTDI Ecoboost engines in 2 different vehicles . Both served my family very well. Zero issues. '15 Lincoln MKZ AWD sedan & '22 Edge AWD. 184k mis on the Lincoln..uses zero oil /runs great. Edge 19k mis gen2 2.0L even smoother/quieter. Good basic maintenance goes a long way! Full synthetic oil every 5k mis. Ford has had the least carbon issues of all brands using 4cyl GTDI designs.

I seen a video of a guy who said the 2.0 Eco is made in Spain and Ohio and are exactly the same engines but the one built in Ohio has more frequent problems with coolant intrusion and for some reason the one built in Spain dont have this problem.

Great video, thanks for sharing, just curious in your opinion, does the oil catch can help with the carbon build up problem; thank you
