20 year sentence for kidnapping, extorting & murdering 4 people. Only 20 years? _SERIOUSLY?_

For as long as I live I will never forget first hearing Lauren Boebert openly say that America ought to be a theocracy. It was so disturbing to hear someone say that out loud to the public.

As a child forced to attend a *very* fundamentalist church, I was literally afraid of this woman because she was vilified as a demon. Once I finally broke through the walls of religious indoctrination, I realized why Christians considered themselves soldiers against her one-person army. Now, in my 60s, I believe she needs more recognition as the true patriot she was.

My father was a devoted Catholic and he taught me to have great respect for this woman and her struggles against the idea of a state religion.

I knew of her. However, I did not know she was kidnapped and murdered. Her quote "There is an absolute steady retreat...into a robber-baron society and religiously dominated society" quote was profound. She got that one right.

At age 75, I still consider her a remarkable woman to whom we owe a huge thank you. She is not hated in my house.

In the late 1970s I was attending high school in Houston, Tx. Our teacher asked us to write an essay on someone I thought was heroic. I picked Madelyn Murray O'Hair. This apparently alarmed my teacher, because she called my parents. My atheist parents were amused.

I remember as a child she was vilified. Now as a secular humanist and atheist I realize how brave she was to speak out as she did

I first heard of O’Hair through the Netflix film The Most Hated Woman in America. A few years after the film came out, I took a grad school class called Ballots and Bibles for my grad school degree and it opened up my eyes about how little church-state separation existed until O’Hair’s suit. I’m super grateful the separation exists - and this is coming from a super spiritual person!

I’m 73 so I can remember Christian prayer in my public school. I disliked it because my family was not religious at all and I had no idea what was going on. When I became a teacher, one of the first things I did was remind the principal that it was against the law to allow Mormon leaders in the halls of our high school to recruit our Navajo students. Luckily he followed through. People are still spreading the myth that prayer in schools will prevent misbehavior. I can testify that we misbehaved in spite of school prayer.

Madilyn Murray O’Hare: one of the most needlessly and undeservedly vilified women in the history of this country. Most of us secularists owe her a huge debt of gratitude for taking the slings and arrow she did standing for church state separation.

I came out to my friends as an atheist at a Christmas party (not a good time) because I had explained why I didn’t celebrate Hanukkah as well. After the abuse I took I went to the library and found Madeline Mario Harris book “why I am an atheist.” While visiting my brother down in Texas, I noted that the book was printed there. My brother said he knew where that place was and we went and I got to meet Robin and get a tour of the place and then asked if I wanted to meet Mrs. O’Hair. I said most definitely, and I got to thank her for removing the reading of the Lord’s prayer and other religious readings from public school just two weeks prior to my birth. I was very saddened to hear about her and her son and Robin’s kidnapping as well as their death.😢

I'm religious and I respect her. I understand what she's talking about, it's important that she and her life are talked about. People who are so adamant about 'free speech' need to be told her story. If you want to practice your religion, go ahead, but forcing your unwilling child into it is abuse and forcing schoolchildren to recite verses or pledge to the bible at a public or private school is a violation of the first amendment.

I didn't know Madalyn Murray O’Hair, her son, and her granddaughter were kidnapped and murdered. I remember hearing about her when I was a kid and how evil she was for going to court to take prayer out of schools. Now that I'm an adult, I understand why prayer shouldn't be in public schools. I also believe “In God, We Trust” should be removed from our money, and “under God” should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance.

I still remember my "Christian" mother implying that Madalyn and her family got what they deserved back when her fate was revealed. I was appalled.

Madalyn Murray O'Hair was a pioneer. She fought vigilantly against religious tyranny. She deserves so much more. Thank you for remembering her!

15 years after Abingdon, when I was in second grade, my teacher led us in the Lord's Prayer every morning. Only after did I find out that it shouldn't have been allowed.

4:18 I had to pause and laugh. The man wouldn’t divorce his wife because it’s against his religion but adultery isn’t?!? He’s just going to pick and choose what he follows. 😂😂

Madalyn was repressed as an atheist. She got out and loud and proud. I don't see that as a flaw. She called out religious hypocrisy.
