How To Tie The STRONGEST Palomar Knot For Braid [Contest WINNER]

This video is for those who aren't merely concerned with the simple question of "how to tie a palomar knot"...

It's for the next level for those who are seeking to learn the strongest palomar knot style for braided line. And you might be shocked to learn that the "traditional" way of tying the popular Palomar knot isn't exactly the strongest when it comes to braid...

As you know, braid and mono have very different characteristics... which makes for the knots used on each type of line to be performed differently depending on the line.

And this is completely true for the very popular Palomar Knot too...

We actually did a knot contest specifically for the palomar knot for both braid and mono lines in which we tested different ways of tying the palomar knot and then we compared their breaking strengths.

And not too surprisingly, we found that tying a palomar the traditional style was not the best option for braided line...

This is because the knot was made popular well before braided line became the top choice for many fishermen.

And the traditional style is more for mono, so that leaves us with a problem on how to make it more effective for braid.

Well that answer is very simple and is in line with how other popular knots like the Palomar have been modified for braid...

Just double any and all twists/turns in the knot...

This is because braid has much less friction so requires more loops/twists to ensure it doesn't pull.

And our test proved that to be true... the best modified palomar for braid ended up being exactly double of the two turns of a traditional palomar knot...

This palomar knot video shows exactly how to tie it. We call it the "Improved Palomar Knot" for braid.

FINALLY a knot tying video where you can actually see and understand how the knot is tied.
So many others use actual fishing line against backgrounds that make the line essentially invisible

I'm gonna try my hand at this next time. Twice now in the past few years I have lost a massive fish from a break at the Palomar knot on my braid line. I will see if this one holds better. Thanks

Love the knot, a little time to create it but worth the time it takes to tie it. I'm going to change to this knot for all my braided applications

I think you are very thorough at tying knots and have seen a few of your videos. I use 1 modification on this knot, especially when using fluorocarbon. I notice this knot tends to nick the line with flouro when the final cinch down occurs, even when wetting. I've seen this occur many times when using fluorocarbon line. I have found a way to prevent this. After you do your 2 loops in the beginning to double the Palomar and wrap the line around the hook and pull it up passed the eye, I stick my finger in the loop and leave it there while I tighten it gently down on my finger. Then I remove my finger and perform the final cinch down. Since I started doing this, I have never had this method knot nick the line. Maybe you do something to prevent this from happening that I am missing, but this is what I found is a foolproof way that works for me. Thanks.

Looks like you guys are kind of close neighbors. I actually live in Bradenton. Would like to meet you guys personally at anytime or in one of your events. I spearfish and do some offshore fishing. kind of struggle with so many fishing knots. You guys made my life more easier with your knot tutorials. Looking forward to use the Orvis and Strong Palomar knots soon. Next project is to land a keeper Snook for the first time. Looking over your Snook video for this reason. I have a 19 1/2 Mako which helps me to do either fishing. I just recently retired from Walgreens Pharmacy. Now i have the time to say "fish on". Do you guys do any charter fishing? Best way to learn is to have your teacher next to you. If you guys are around this area you are welcome in my boat captain. Love your theme song!! Best

Will this knot work well for mono too?

Palomar was made for mono/ fluoro. And if your uni knots are slipping with braid... go up to 10-12 wraps. Never had it slip. Not even once

I am a novice at tying a palomar knot. I can tie many other types of knots successfully. I have followed the instructions in the video 12 times. I am applying all the strenght I have and applying water to line at the knot. The loop will not tighten. What am I doing incorrectly?
