One of the turn-points of the movie is when Frodo makes up his mind to do the bravest thing imaginable. To let go of the company, the warmth of men and elves, and into the pits of fire and hell. He knows how difficult it is going to be--but the moment the he set the boat into the river, he knew he had done the right thing.

There is a quality about these movies that speaks to human nature so deeply. I have watched the LOTR movies more times than I can count and something tells me I'll be watching this when I'm 80.

This scene is what I always come back to when I feel tired and weak. I’ve struggled with pain and disability my whole life. I was born 4 weeks premature with one eye smaller than the other. At 6 months old, surgery to remove a tumor in that eye left me absolutely blind in that eye. I’m legally blind in the other. I didn’t begin using actual words until I was 3 and even then was tongue-tied and had to have another surgery to repair that. At 10, I began losing my hearing and was diagnosed with an incurable neurological disorder. Another surgery to remove a tumor in my ear left me completely deaf and another tumor in my other ear left me deaf in that one also during my senior year of high school. I’ve had to learn a whole new language (ASL) in order to communicate with others. Then 4 years ago, I began having seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. My most recent episode was a week ago when I had 7 in the span of one night and had to go to the ER.

I’m 28 now and my life has just been one long struggle. My burden, my Ring to carry. I have family at my side, but no true “Sam” figure. I’ve suffered from depression for over a decade and have contemplated suicide many times. But I always come back to Frodo’s quote in this scene and Gandalf’s response. I wish more than anything that none of this happened to me, but in the end it’s no use feeling sorry for yourself. Everyone dies, everyone suffers—that’s a fact of life. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that’s given to us.

As silly as it may sound this speech is what I feel like I will go to whenever I am sad. It is about fate, and our inability to change it. It's about showing our destinies and our fate who is boss, and the fact that though it may be out of our power, we still have the ability to master it and deny its intentions. We can weather any darkness so long as we decide the right thing to do with the time that is given to us, with the fait that befalls us. It's not about what happens… But how we react to what happens.
