For the last test, my fear is that as you pull up the other person, their dead weight pulls you forward and you go head first over the cliff.

In a lot of movie scenarios, the person on the cliff catches the falling person while they're in the process of falling, meaning that they would have more momentum falling down. It definitely depends on the person and of course this would be pretty dangerous to test out, but catching someone who was in the process of falling could potentially lead to the person on the cliff being dragged down with them.

I feel an underrated part of this video is how strong Olivia is. Her climbing up from your ankles is pretty impressive!

The thing is though, these two are both very fit and know what they do and how to climb. Adrenaline will probably compensate for the lack of strength a bit, but if the person you are trying to save is scared out of their mind, doesn't think rationally anymore and is possibly working against you, you are screwed.

I think there's not a single person that didn't ask themselves this question while watching a scene like that, this is the best! You're answering our deep dark questions 🤣

6:26 I have to give Olivia's dramatic death scene a 💯/10

keep in mind that Ben is a trained athlete with very good grip and pulling strength even compared to the average fit guy, I don't think that the average fit guy on the gym can even hold on let alone someone who does not work out

So what I've learned is if I'm able to dive towards the edge of a cliff and manage to grab my love interest's hand before they fall into the abyss, I'll be able to say goodbye before dropping them into it.

I once tried to rescue a homeless man who fell into the canal in my city. _(he must have been about 70kg)_

I'm 67kg, 183cm tall (6'0) and I'm a decent fighter (MMA)and I couldn't for the life of me get him to safety.

One of the car mechanics who was working there noticed the situation and pulled him out of there like a dumbell. He must have been around 90kg of pure muscle. God bless his soul and strength. Pulling someone up like this isn't easy

3:50 The actual movie scenario typically is wore: The person first cannot be saved because your arms are just a few centimeters short, even if both of you stretch to your limits. Then the victim slips / last rope tears / rocks fall and suddenly, in a last attempt, your arms are long enough to get a firm grip :)

One key thing about grabbing the arm of a falling person in movies is that they always reach and grab the person mid-fall. In these tests, you just start with your hand around the wrist. The most implausible thing about those scenes has always been being able to grab their wrist without the momentum carrying you over with them.

This happened to me when I was young, i was hanging off a cliff in the forest for dear life. I was so scared in that moment, my grip was failing me and I couldn't hold it anymore, my body just let go but luckily there was a landing spot which I did not see since the foilage were covering them. Unlike the movies, my life did not flash before my eyes. The only thing i remembered was being so scared of falling and i was crying in that moment.

Okay can we all appreciate Olivia for being able to hold herself during the cliff scenario 🤣

I have an observation here 3:43. It seems to me that it is more effective to pull a person when you cross to the opposite arm. I tried to mimic that movement and I realized that it’s more comfortable for the one on top, to do a pulling motion with crossed arms because it recruits the lats, the rhomboids, rear delts and the biceps together, instead of doing it in a straight position.

I feel like a minor problem with the "hang from something and swing the other person to safety" is the fact that, in most movies, they're holding onto some sort of rope with is much harder to hold onto with one arm than gym rings or similar

Seeing how athletic Oliva was and the amount of teamwork needed. I realize if I was in this scenario I would probably be screwed lol

I got my first ever bodyweight chin up just other day and I literally thought to myself “Would I finally be able to save myself if I was dangling off a cliff?” What a well timed video.

The one thing that can't really be accounted for is the raw strength that can be mustered up in death defying situations like that, I'm certain that could give everyone at least a bit of an edge.

Regarding the last scenario where the distressed person has no grip strength: It seems counter intuitive, but stepping on or putting your own hands on the fingers of the hanging person actually helps them tremendously - given the ledge isn’t too sharp of course. Then you can reposition your own body or recover energy while they are just hanging there helped by your weight.
