Megaproject: Singapore's Deep Tunnel Sewerage System | Tomorrow City | Part 1/3

Singapore is geologically challenged and with climate change, a growing population and economic competition – the country needs land to develop. To overcome the pervasive space challenge, the country is investing in megaprojects that will help overcome these problems and take it into the next century.

One such project is the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System. By using new technology, this infrastructure will also take Singapore’s sewage management into the next century. But tunnelling under built up areas is less than ideal. The team has to move massive tunnel boring machines that are each the length of 10 SBS buses underground. And that’s not the biggest challenge. Deep below, they have to contend with geological challenges and the ever present risk of sinkholes.

Currently I am working in Singapore at a nursing home. Originally from Sri Lanka. I feel shamed of my own country when I see how far this little country is thinking in to the future for the generations to come. How creative they are in forming new opportunities and whatsoever that the people would look for.

And the discipline within the nation is beyond expectancy even though there are some bitter incidents in time to time. But, overall, the whole country is very positive thinking and well mannered.

Those people back in Sri Lanka have lot more to learn from this small country. I am really proud how Singapore thinks for their own people and their future.

I was in Singapore for 9 months working for the project in 2019/2020. Doing soil engineering works for the TBM to excavate through Jurong Formation rock mainly build from sedimentary rock that covers south-west portion of the Singapore island. Strengthening the soil or the foundation along the TBM route of excavation by grouting method such as rock fissure grouting by filling the void inside the rock with cement pumped with high pressure. Singapore is a nice place to work and stay....

Singapore is always at the forefront of pioneering technologies in not only the use of the land they do have, but the land they don't have as well, truly amazing projects in general, but absolutely stunning to see the pride in which they conduct their work, and the way they're looking forward so far into the future for generations to come...I wish so many more countries could take a leaf out of their book and use the same foresight. i worked on Phase 1 of this project from 2003 to 2005 driving 1 of the TBM's - it was very wet and difficult.
The people and the food made up for all the hardship we faced at work.

Having visited Singapore 10 years ago for a few days, I have to say what a fantastic place it is. Street crime is almost non existent the place is beautiful and clean, the people are really friendly and kind. If I were a younger man I’d love to live there.
