How Chicago Cleans 1.4 Billion Gallons Of Wastewater Every Day | Deep Cleaned | Insider

The Stickney Water Reclamation Plant in Illinois is one of the largest wastewater-treatment facilities in the world, serving about 2.3 million people and cleaning an average of 700 million gallons of wastewater a day. During rainfall, the facility can handle a whopping 1.44 billion gallons of wastewater in a single day — that's a million gallons every minute.

The clean water is released into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, and the sludge that is removed from the water is converted to biosolids, which are a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers.

Flushable wipes aren't flushable? How are companies allowed to get away with calling them flushable? 🤔

Wish this flick was longer, I would definitely enjoy a 45-minute deep dive into the specifics of that facility. Good Job

My dad worked in both water & wastewater treatment, so I visited both treatment plants several times growing up. I always found it fascinating, even the wastewater plant, but the smell definitely isn't fun.

I live less than two miles from here. Glad to see the process in action. I'll never complain about the smell ever again

If you were still flushing "flushable" wipes before seeing this video, this is your sign to stop doing so henceforth.

Hundreds of farms across America used wastewater sludge as cheap fertilizer to fertilize crops for people and animals to graze, but absurd levels of PFA's levels were detected in the meat and vegetables above the FDA allowed levels.

This reminds me of my internship era. I was assigned to evaluate industrial waste water treatment, and this video is very acurate. They didn't sugar coat about the smell 😂

I never realized how clean a waste water treatment plant would be. This was fascinating!

I build waste water plants in central Illinois. The amount of clarifiers at that plant is mind blowing.

Props go out to these guys, can’t imagine what it takes to operate a plant of that size

I wonder how many tampons are being processed every day that he didn’t mention?

Extraordinary man doing an extraordinary job. Great video thanks for posting.

Also if new to cooking, please when handling waste cooking oil, put it into a waste container (bunched up aluminum foil works), let it cool/solidify & chuck it into the trash. Simply dumping in your sink puts at high risk your sewer pipes clogging once cooling & solidifying.

The combination of cooking oil & toilet paper does in even the craziest of sewage pipes.

This coming from a water resources engineer.

What do you do for heavy metal and PFAS testing? A lot of farm land has been condemned due to contamination from bio solids.
