I actually really like Duolingo. Obviously it's not enough to teach you a language from scratch, but the lessons are so short and easy that there's really no excuse for not doing at least one every day. This feeling of continuing success is SO important for morale when undertaking a years-long process such as learning to speak a foreign language

Thanks Liz! I have always given myself a hard time with Portuguese and that's quite embarrassing if you consider I am living in Lisbon for almost 7 years by now. And, actually, I got nowhere with it. I promised myself to get better with it at the beginning of 2023 and guess what − didn't work out.
So, I gave the same promise for this year, stumbled "by chance?" upon your channel and I am already into it after watching some of your videos. Right now I installed the apps you recommended on my phone, did a brief check and yes, they're quite useful!
This will make a change, I feel it already.
Again, thanks for bringing the words to us and have a wonderful, happy, healthy and exciting new year in 2024 🙏

I've been away for month and just catching up. I've been learning Portuguese since 2019 as preparation for a holiday. Yes, I started with Duolingo as there was very little around. My other half also embarked on this. I used the BBC Talk CD and books, as I used them for Spanish, French and Italian. The local college, which I attended on Saturdays, used the Bbc French as the basis of its courses.
APPS, we both like using the Reverso. I use the RTP Estudo em Casa APP, in particular the one for non native speakers. I use one lesson of 30 mins everyday. 2 levels and I know it is for schoolkids. I did use the French one as well for a few weeks was considering going to France for a holiday. Better than my own UK school lessons. When my Portuguese is better may go for the History lessons. . My hubby and I have different learning styles and language experiences so we learn apart! He also uses Duolingo but hates the translations on his French! He has completed language courses at school; Latin, French and Spanish. He picks languages very easily. He likes Memrise for his Portuguese and Michel Thomas learning packages. We're planning on a move to Portugal in the future but we have caring responsibilities so even coming for intensive courses are out ftm. Online are an issue as our internet in the Highlands of Scotland is not always supportive of zoom etc. So I am battling away with Text books, CD's and downloadable audios. The Portuguese Bookshop in Cheltenham have been great and also their Bookshop in London has been visited one when visiting. I used Reverso sometimes to help me with Rubric. Also worth checking second hand bookshops, I bought some textbooks in Wigtown, BookTown of Scotland.
We plan to visit Portugal for a few weeks and sign up for an intensive course 3 to 4 weeks at Coimbra, Oporto or any of a similar type. I put in about 2-3 hours per day, except on holidays when I do 1 hour.

Linguno! One of the biggest difficulties I have is with conjugation and this helps me practice conjugating verbs. It’s web based but I think they plan to make it into an app in the future.

Practice Portuguese app is the best. The UX of the app itself is not the best, but the content is amazing, you get everything from grammar, vocabulary, listening, smart practice. Highly recommend.

I often use DeepL, because I let translate longer articles in Portuguese for my German friends. Though I would be able to translate it myself, it goes a lot faster with that tool. Thank you for you video, I didn't know the other links you mentioned, I will prove them.

How much Portuguese people and Brazilians understand each other? Is it mainly because of the pronunciation?

Duolingo caused me problems down the line because I wanted to speak EU PT, now i have to force myself not to pronounce it the Brazilian way which is a lot of extra work now for me and still get confused or i end overthinking it. I would definitely discourage it.

I moved to Portugal from the US 2 weeks ago with my husband to take care of his grandparents, I knew the move was coming so I started watching your videos and trying some apps... but do you know of any schools or classes I can take to learn more? I'm about an hour from Lisbon

Reverso is impolite. I said "hello Sir, do you speak English" and it used "Voce" : )

Hi, I love your videos but the Portuguese Verb Conjugator does not seem to have the correct pronunciation. (Ex. Listen to the conjugations for "abaixar")

Hello, thanks a ton for all your videos, which I truly enjoyed. Can I schedule an hour of your time (I’ll pay of course) so that I can ask you questions about relocation from France to Portugal? I have tons of them
