It’s big in Russia but almost unknown in Europe and America. And yet it’s a well-structured, garbage-collected, cross-platform language that is FREE to use. In this video I look at the PascalABC.Net language and IDE. You can download a copy, free, from:

Huw Collingbourne is author of The Little Book Of Delphi (Object Pascal) Programming. Available from:

MORE VIDEOS
=============
I have hundreds of videos and even complete programming courses on my YouTube channel. They cover everything from low-level programming in C to coding an adventure game in C# or Java. I cover languages as varied as Ruby, Object Pascal and Smalltalk. No matter what your programming level or area of expertise, I’m sure you’ll find something to interest you. Go to my Playlists page and browse around:

Be sure to subscribe to the Code With Huw channel so that you get a notification when I upload more lessons in this series.

PROGRAMMING BOOKS
====================
If you want to learn programming in more depth (and also support this channel!) you might think of buying one of my books. I have written books on C programming, Using Pointers in C, Delphi, Ruby, Recursion and other programming topics. You can buy my books (paperback or Kindle) on Amazon.

Nice!
I remember your articles from PC Plus. We had an IT Bookstore in Poznan, where British PC Plus and German PC Dos Magazine were available. Good old times :)

I don't speak or read Russian, but my Android phone certainly does. There's a translation program built into the camera app on the phone, and I've used it more than a few times to translate Japanese while playing old games that only released in Japan. It's not perfect, but you can generally muddle through if you try a couple of times to get it to translate. Sometimes it doesn't recognize characters correctly, but wiggle the phone and magic.

It's interesting how popular the Wirthian languages appear to be in Russia. There's some current Oberon implementations used there as well.

It's interesting that I was shown this video in my feed.

I picked up a few of your "The Little Book of..." series a few months back and have done a few of the chapters in them as I could. I had no clue you were the author of those books when this was recommended. I'm also avoiding most .NET stuff as I use Linux as my daily driver, so this is helpful too.

Ran across it when i was doing some Pascal lately while trying to write something for the Amiga and it was quite pleasant. Too bad i had to dump Pascal for the project as i quite enjoy it and have fond memories of my Turbo Pascal days. But the reasons it's such a good language to learn programming are also the reasons its not quite great when you're doing "weird stuff". And i guess that was the thinking of Anders Hejlsberg when he made C#, because of his Pascal background. If you're going to make it very strict, you have to make sure the "low level basics" are in the language (and easy to use), or you end up in such a Frankenmonster you might has well have gone with plain C and all the pointer shenanigans. Which is kinda where i ended, a C# server in Windows and a C client on the Amiga.

What do you think of Oxygene? Apart from the price.

Can one dynamically create and display dotNet visual objects? This would, presumably, get round the lack of cross-platform support from WinForms... 🤔

According to the Github repo, it is possible to build for macOS, so, I am officially interested 😉

Not the best moment to promote russian products. It's like promoting the Volkswagen in 1942.
