How to get rid of hiccups? - Medical myths

We have all heard it before, being startled can stop hiccups. But is it true?

Hiccups are a reflex that can happen without our will, we all know this. When you hiccup, your body creates a loop between the hiccupcentre in your brain, several nerve pathways, muscles of your ribs and neck and your diaphragm.
To get rid of hiccups we need to break this loop, for example by consciously activating the nerves or muscles involved in hiccups.

There are several ways to do this; holding your breath, pressing your eyeballs, blowing on the back of your hand and being startled.

These won’t work in everybody, all the time, but just try a few of them out. Before you know it you will be hiccupfree.

Thank you for the eyeball move! I’ve had the hiccups for the last hour and it’s keeping me awake. Now I can finally get to bed thank you!

Interesting but drinking water is something I've heard only in my country as an advice. Usually we say "hold your breath or drink water". The best advice so far I've had was from a man familiar with ballet. He said ballerinas are doing it when they're alone, the second someone to hold their body back - exactly like people do to crack their spine if you get what I mean. (I don't suggest doing this anyway if you're not absolutely sure what you're doing). But what if you're alone? Drink water, have a good, full sip of water and than open your chest, push your shoulders up and back and push carefully push your head back while inhale. The idea is the water to open your throat and with the second part you get the oxygen needed. One time doing it is absolutely enough, and I surely can say this is the best trick I've ever tried! PS: Hate it when I lit a cigarette and it always stops when I throw it :D

No joke, but twice now I have used peanut butter. About 15 seconds after eating, they were gone.

I had eaten peanut butter and they went away, came back ten minutes later so I tried the eyeball trick and it’s good now!
